Tutoring is not like formal teaching in the school where we teach concepts, assigns activity, monitor assess student’s academic learning. Tutoring is completely focused on what the particular student wishes to progress in; helping students in the area they aren’t confident about, making students to set a goal and achieve the target with…

The most important thing I can do for a student is providing the tools and resources to be able to tackle problems independently, no matter the difficulty. To do this, it is important to design personalised methodologies that allow students to learn the basic knowledge, get familiar with some examples and then put into practice what was learned…

I can instil good study habits where my students become independent learners. I aim to help my students to understand, not memorise, so they grasp concepts and apply them independently. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand the pupil’s learning style and adapt the teaching to which best suits the pupil. It is imperative to understand that everyone absorbs knowledge differently and thus it is importantly that a tutor understands that and adapts accordingly. If I can make a student begin thinking more about the subject than just a grade to obtain, I would have felt that I made one more curious person. Curiosity is the root of knowledge in my opinion, and it would be the seed that I can share with the students that I engage with. I believe, they would lie in science, especially with regard to my…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student capable of explaining the concepts to another person. Explaining the correct concepts the right way is the key to make the basics and fundamentals to remain in the student's mind. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my ability to break down complex concepts into easily…

Listening to a student is the most important thing a tutor can do. It allows you to prepare better for future sessions and meet the needs of the students. It also helps you modify your teaching approach to keep the students engaged in the class. I believe my approach to teaching is efficient as I break down concepts to the basics and use multiple…

Listen to a student from the heart, lead and help a student to establish confidence of the subject. To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. As I was once a private tutee, I understand how the tutor should explain concepts in a clear and…

Inside AscotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on ratios and dividing with decimals, also practicing worded ratio problems from her textbook.

For Year 9, Lola worked through algebraic expressions and simultaneous equations, including strategies for adding and subtracting with negative numbers.

In Year 11, Ava tackled sketching parabolas by examining how coefficients affect their shape and applied these concepts using software to estimate real-life structures.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often completed algebra questions in cramped, unstructured layouts, leading to confusion and errors; as a tutor observed, "she sometimes tends to do her working out in a cramped space and loses her train of thoughts causing her to make mistakes."

In Year 12 Accounting, small calculation errors crept in when practice with income statements wasn't followed up by revisiting feedback or reviewing past work.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions when unsure—leaving misunderstandings unaddressed until the next lesson and slowing progress on topics like negative numbers.

Recent Achievements

One Ascot tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from a D to a B on their latest assessment, after weeks of showing less resistance and even adding their own input when solving questions—previously, they would avoid engaging at all.

In another session, a high schooler who used to hesitate now independently completed almost an entire maths assignment without asking for help, bringing in techniques remembered from earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by doing all her homework exactly as instructed and getting most answers right—a first for her this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Belmont Primary School.
