According to me, it is to be open and provide a comfortable environment to the students, where they can study and share their thoughts without hesitating. Apart from this, it is to make learning a fun process by teaching in a more fun way, this includes doing different activities to make children understand the concepts, etc. I do possess great…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. Fantastic service with good follow-up. Tutor is extremely reliable and diligent but a little difficult to understand due to a strong accent. A bit costly but worth the good service.
Kim, Bassendean

Inside BassendeanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia worked on structuring analytical paragraphs using the TROPICAL method and practised linking textual techniques to broader themes in a comparative essay; she also explored features of open letters with brief examples.

In Year 10, James focused on solving linear equations—identifying equation components, graphing lines from rules or points, and practiced expanding brackets, including an introduction to quadratic expansion via FOIL.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ethan identified graphemes for specific phonemes in spelling activities and applied his understanding of author's purpose by analysing NAPLAN reading texts for persuasive or informative intent.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in English showed strong ideas but struggled to link analysis to the actual essay question, often missing required elements—"teachers highlight not answering the question properly," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, another student didn't write down working steps when solving equations with brackets, making it difficult to track errors and missed marks for incomplete reasoning.

A Year 7 learner forgot to record homework instructions despite reminders; this led to confusion over what needed completing.

In Science (Year 10), explanations lacked detail and key terminology, costing marks on test responses and leaving answers too vague.

Recent Achievements

One Bassendean tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip showing her working in maths now carefully writes each step for algebra and measurement problems, which has helped her catch mistakes early.

In English, a Year 11 student who previously struggled to analyse texts is now confidently linking language techniques to themes and perspectives—she even explained how character beliefs shaped the message in a recent novel study.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through reading is taking time to sound out tricky words and goes back over errors independently, finishing a passage with only two self-corrected mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bassendean Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's School.
