Give them confidence- either to have a crack at new questions or topics, or just continue to work and learn independently. Usually this is achieved by helping students find a way to enjoy the subject. I'm a good communicator and very empathetic. I've always been told I'd be an excellent teacher- my habit is to always make sure a tutee has…

The most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is to help them build their skills so that they can efficiently study. I also think a tutor should be able to teach students how to effectively study and implement study techniques. My strengths as a tutor would be that I am determined in my own studies and I try to methodically break…

Be someone a student feels comfortable with so they can ask any questions they need without feeling judged. It is also important that the tutor can, of course, answer questions, as well as provide strategies to help the student become a more independent learner in the future. I find it easy to breakdown a concept and explain each step of the way.…

A student comes to a biology tutor because they struggle to understand the knowledge and they cannot communicate their struggles in school, hence they look up to us. So its very important to understand their problems, get simple solutions which makes it easier for them to grasp and then apply them. I believe my strengths are communication, making…

Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

I think the most important thing is to listen to the student and allow them to feel confident in asking for help. It's important to make sure that the student doesn't feel dumb or like they're being looked down upon when asking a question. It's also important to be honest, if you don't know the answer it's better to tell the student this and…

I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a biology tutor can do for a student. As a biology tutor, I believe that it is important to be patient with students and allow them to grasp the concept on their own, albeit with a firm guiding hand, as I find that this allows the pupil to adopt a more proactive and self-sufficient mindset. My experience with this method often found a great deal of pride and accomplishment within both…

Inside FitzgibbonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara worked through solving algebraic equations and was introduced to the Pythagoras theorem, applying both in practice problems.

For Year 10, Michael tackled quadratic equations—finding x and y intercepts and using polynomial long division—to strengthen his graphing skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Priya focused on exponentials and logarithms, breaking down real-world examples to understand their applications.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived unprepared for their session, which meant time was spent catching up instead of deepening understanding.

In Year 11 Methods, communication issues about lesson goals and expectations made it harder to target upcoming exam revision effectively—"communication between Maddie and I was difficult at times."

One senior student hesitated to ask for help when uncertain on assignment solutions, likely due to stress and wanting to move on quickly.

Meanwhile, a younger student pretended to understand algebra during the session but struggled alone later; this left gaps unnoticed until much later in revision.

Recent Achievements

A Fitzgibbon tutor noticed Kayden, a high school student, begin to talk aloud and backcheck his maths working—an encouraging shift from his earlier hesitance to try problems independently.

Another recent session saw Harry, also in high school, move past simply following along; after reviewing the basics of surface area, he handled a set of worded questions with noticeably less prompting than before.

For Zali in Year 9, understanding how to use the cosine rule for her assignment marked a real breakthrough since she'd previously struggled with applying formulas to real tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bracken Ridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit College.
