Help them gain confidence in their own intellectual capabilites across the board, not just in a specific subject. One of my major strengths is patience. I think as a tutor it is very important to understand the student and their situation and to make sure they are comfortable and ready to learn. A lot of patience is required as students have their…

Being understanding. Everyone learns and does everything at their own rate, I believe tutors need to understand when to adapt what teaching method with their student and when to switch techniques. By being a student myself I understand how to connect with a student and teach in various ways, allowing for an adaptive teaching…

Some of the most important things a student can gain from having a tutor would be to build up their confidence in a certain subject, by providing specialised teaching and education for that specific student, to increase their understanding. A tutor would also provide a different perspective of difficult concepts, being seperated from the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is not only understanding the students well, but also knowing how much the student knows, and being able to convey lessons well. Patience and perseverance with students. Ability to understand the needs of different types of students and handle them…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

Help students to help themselves by scaffolding their learning and building their confidence. Tutor-student connection. If the pair don't maintain an almost friends connection it is hard to influence the students learning for the better. I understand the frustrations that come with the failures in teaching, and I can successfully help students overcome that, as well as I know how to adapt my teaching style to better benefit the…

Gives more confidence and patience, in explainng the concept of maths to the student. Cheer the students in a good way upon solving the given question. My strength is explaining the concepts in Maths to the students at a low level so that the student can understand the concept in the section. Furthermore, working at the elementary levels, and…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

I think a tutor is mainly able to improve a student's knowledge/understanding of their subjects. They can also teach the student study strategies which can be carried over to university/TAFE studies. I have a strong understanding of Maths and Science subjects (Maths Specialist/Methods, Physics and Chemistry). Additionally, I have a year of…

I've found in my experience that students often lack self confidence, they are extremely capable but feel as though they can't take the problem. I find tutoring for students can be extremely empowering for them. They often surprise themselves with their achievements and this helps them really develop their confidence. Confidence is a hugely…

Teaching students HOW to learn and effective methods for learning, instead of just showing students the course material which they have likely already seen in class. Of course, refreshing core concepts is key to building a strong foundation, but tutors should aim to extend their students, to go further than what is required. Also, they should have…

I believe it is the tutor's job to tailor the lessons and concepts to each individual student. In addition to teaching to the student's weaknesses, the tutor must make connections to the student's interests. The tutor should also recognise and minimise the student's weaknesses. Most importantly, the tutor's primary responsibility is to equip the…

Actively listen, that’s what lacks the most in a school-student relationship which breaks down a student and make them approach outside help. If a tutor fails to listen to the students needs, they are failing this role miserably. It’s the core of being a tutor, besides knowing what you’re telling your student. This not only makes the student…

The most important thing is to motivate to them so that they want to learn, instead of thinking that studying is just for the sake of having good results in school. I believe it is most important that the tutor addresses what the student has problems with specifically as they are tailoring their classes to suit the needs of the students. To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

Inside North LakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Daniel practised converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, alongside spelling review using GATE sample test material.

For Year 9, Tom focused on algebraic factorisation (taking out common factors) and index laws, working through targeted textbook questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harry revised simultaneous equations with practice problems from his class text and Ezymath resources, ensuring step-by-step accuracy in his solutions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student was unaware of the test on Tuesday and therefore had not prepared for it, highlighting ongoing organization issues—missing assessment dates meant last-minute revision and incomplete cheat sheets.

Another in Year 9 English hesitated to plan ahead, often jumping into narratives without mapping out resolutions or main ideas, leading to rushed endings.

A Year 8 student relied heavily on mental calculations, skipping written working for algebra problems; as noted, "showing workings rather than just an answer which he had done in his head" was still inconsistent, making errors harder to spot during review.

Recent Achievements

One North Lake tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously making frequent careless errors in trig questions, is now double-checking his work and catching mistakes before they cost him marks.

A Year 9 session saw a quieter student begin to talk through her thought process out loud while tackling tough algebra problems—something she used to avoid by guessing silently.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with reading comprehension surprised the tutor by summarising the main idea of a new text without prompting and identifying key points independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bull Creek Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blue Gum Montessori School.
