I think so rather than just teaching them if a tutor can actually make hard concepts easier for other students by using their experience and actually make learning fun then it would be really helpful for a student. As I am a post grad student I have recently gone through my tutorials and I know as a post grad student where do students face…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be for a student is patience. Everyone works and learns on different levels and it is up to the tutor to make the learning of the subject fun and enjoyable. My biggest strengths when tutoring are my passion for the subjects I talk about, and most importantly being calm and patient to those I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and create a supportive learning environment where questions and mistakes are welcomed. A tutor should personalise their approach to match the student’s individual learning style, clarify difficult concepts in simple terms, and encourage curiosity and…

The primary reason why a student may hire a tutor is to give them the in-depth understanding of "Why" the concept is the way it hence. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. Additionally, as a part of tutor, it is my responsibility to…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

This encourages critical thinking amongst students and shows them that they are capable enough to learn these hard concepts that they may be dealing with. Ultimately, teaching…

Further a Tutor can mentor the student both academically and emotionally to boost the morale. This can can instill confidence and help the student to think logically and inculcate creativity and…

The main thing is being able to effectively explain a topic or clear students' doubts. If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, of course apart from being thorough in the subject matter they are teaching, is also to be very empathetic towards the student. A tutor must be able to put themselves in the student's shoes to comprehend the difficulties they are facing. I believe that everyone will love a subject if it is…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

It's important go at the student pace and create an environment where they can freely ask for help when they don't understand a concept. I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

I consider guidance as the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Teachers are important but sometimes they can be carried away by teaching a large group of students in the class. Tutors are there to give personal support to the students to help not just their academic development and also emotionally What most teachers cannot do is…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia focused on VCE Biology Unit 3 topics, including nucleic acids and DNA/RNA manipulation processes like transcription and translation, working through sample exam questions for deeper understanding.

Year 9 student Thomas practiced solving equations involving powers and multiple variables in algebra, alongside word problems to reinforce these skills.

For a younger learner in Year 6, lessons covered measurement conversions between centimeters and meters as well as tackling multi-step worded questions that combined addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student hesitated when differentiating between nucleic acids and amino acids, particularly during gene regulation discussions; as noted, "needs a little more support with the details of transcription."

In Year 9 Mathematics, persistent self-doubt was evident: despite understanding indices rules when prompted, she hesitated to apply them independently and made calculation errors.

For a Year 4 student, reluctance to speak up—"she stays quiet instead of telling me she doesn't know how to do the question or because she is afraid to get it wrong"—meant confusion lingered in multi-step word problems. In these moments, uncertainty led to missed opportunities for feedback and growth.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clayton recently noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who now answers exam questions unaided—something she used to depend on heavily.

In another session, a high schooler confidently explained the differences between DNA and RNA and handled tricky protein structure questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd been hesitant about reading aloud started making more attempts during lessons, moving from barely trying to giving it a real go.

One session ended with the student independently working through all her assigned maths problems after just a couple of practice runs together, showing true independent problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Monash Science School.
