Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is equipping the student with the resources and tips they need to be able to be good and excel at a subject. Especially in english, it is important for the student to have the knowledge and analytical way of thinking to really excel and i think once they have been taught how to think this way they…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to make any problem easy to solve with the right understanding. Build clear understanding of fundamentals, not just help complete tasks. A tutor should explain concepts step-by-step, fill gaps in prior knowledge, and ensure the student can apply ideas independently. Adapt to the student’s learning style and pace. This includes adjusting explanations, using different examples, and checking understanding…

As I have noticed with most of my tutors, they usually teach me by making me remember a methodology systematically, thus when there is a slight variation in the question it would stump me. That is why, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to not manufacture students into robots that only remember specific methods for generic…

In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is providing assistance in their work. A tutor has to able to explain the concepts in a particular topic very clearly and confidently. I believe the ability to catalyse inner motivation is the greatest thing a tutor can do for their student. From my experience, I performed the best in subjects where my teachers were able to open my eyes to the interesting and cool aspects, as well as their application in real life. When a student understands not only the "WHAT" of the content,…

The most important thing I can do for students in to have effective communication skills. If you can not tailor your communication in order for your student to grasp what you are trying to teach them then you can not become a well rounded tutor. The most important traits in a tutor is engagement, knowledge, passion and flexibility. All of these must be incorporated within their teaching to aid the students. Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
