For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand. Students who are strugglings with certain subjects might not actually be bad at the subjects but rather they might not have had proper guidance from their teachers or they do not have a strong foundation, or they are just not studying in the right method. Each…

I consider comprehension and confidence in one's skills to be the most crucial thing a tutor should endeavour for their students to grasp. Once a student's comprehension level reaches a certain stage, their progress will be much faster and smoother. Whilst also their confidence becomes a fuel of reinforcement for their drive in achieving their…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

Inside East MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised **perimeter and area calculations for rectangles using visual diagrams**, and began exploring volume concepts.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on **solving equations and inequalities**, including a review of quadratic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James worked through physics motion questions involving **velocity, displacement, and time calculations**, alongside targeted chemistry exam question reviews to strengthen his understanding of key concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for Units 1 and 2 exam questions struggled with calculations, especially when pressured for time—she missed marks on multi-step problems because units weren't clearly written, noted one tutor.

In Year 8 algebra, skipping the step of flipping inequality signs when multiplying by negatives led to repeated errors that practice alone didn't fix.

A Year 4 student's working was often hard to follow due to inconsistent layout; this made checking answers difficult, especially with area versus perimeter tasks.

For a senior Physics student, not responding fully to feedback meant velocity calculations stayed shaky into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Melbourne noticed a big change for one Year 9 student who used to get stuck on fraction problems—she now works through addition, subtraction, and even multiplying fractions with much less hesitation and remembers the steps from week to week.

In a senior session, another student showed initiative by completing several practice exams independently and reported feeling more prepared than before for upcoming assessments.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was previously reluctant to speak up has started asking questions whenever she's unsure about how area and volume differ, instead of quietly guessing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as East Melbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond West Primary School.
