The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, involve being extremely knowledgeable about the subject material and knowing the right way to teach it. A tutor may have achieved extremely good marks, but if he has not planned beforehand, and does not know how to convey his knowledge to the student, he may not be the best…

This can be done by building a strong rapport with students, personalising teaching styles to fit individual needs, helping build effective study habits, positive…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to modify his tutoring technique as per the understanding of the student. Instead of having a general tutoring pattern, it is important that a tutor first understands the mindset of the student and then tailors his technique to teach the concept in a way which is the best for the student.…

I think the most important thing for tutor is to boost curiosity and build confidence for students within their acceptable limits. Tutors should always be responsible and supportive to students learning environments. My strength are patience, passion, and student-centered. I feel that the most important thing a tutor can do is to treat students with respect and be patient with them. This ensures that the student is comfortable in their environment and is more receptive to the tutors advice. I am friendly and extremely patient with any problems that students may come across. I am also good at explaining concepts in a…

A tutor is someone who can help to support and strengthen students' self-efficacy one-on-one. This is extremely important as classroom teachers have to manage multiple students in a classroom and cannot provide the same undivided attention as a tutor can. Tutors instil confidence in their students, assist them in unpacking and understanding areas…

I believe a tutor can have tremendous effects on the self confidence of a student and his ways of learning. I am a very approachable tutor and I mostly have my own ways to approach a problem. I do not believe in trying to memorize the formulae but deriving them and quicker ways of deriving it. I believe this will work to my…

A tutor must explain the theory as simplistic as possible. He or she should ask feedback and change the methodology of teaching for students to understand better. I think that it is important to be friendly with students so as to make them like the subject first. Futhermore, they will be at ease to ask…

Help them gain confidence, and for them to do the best they can. Students that require tutoring are often ones that lack confidence in a subject area. Tutors are there to strengthen and encourage them. Breaking down difficult concepts and passing on my knowledge to students. Also, finding where a student has difficulty and working with them to…

Inside FootscrayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia focused on solving problems involving the volume of cylinders and explored area and circumference of circles, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Liam practiced linear relationships by plotting equations on coordinate grids and worked through questions on finding equations of lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ava reviewed angle types—such as complementary and supplementary angles—and estimated degrees using protractors for hands-on learning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 trigonometry, a student hesitated to attempt challenging problems, focusing mainly on familiar examples—this limited exposure to multi-step scenarios.

For a Year 3 multiplication task, over-reliance on counting rather than recalling tables slowed progress and led to errors ("Need to learn by heart the multiplication table").

In Year 10 data evaluation, incomplete practice with interpreting graphs meant patterns were sometimes missed.

During Year 8 decimal work, one tutor noted: "Need to be more careful while counting the number to put the decimal point and index number." These process gaps often left some questions unanswered or concepts only partly grasped in-session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Footscray noticed a big shift with one high school student who, after struggling to estimate angles without tools, now confidently judges them by eye and checks his work independently.

Another Year 9 student who used to hesitate when stuck on problems has started raising questions mid-session and fixing mistakes right away, instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally cleared up confusion about range and median—after weeks of guessing, he now explains the difference out loud before solving each problem.

Last week, one finished all his homework in just 20 minutes and asked for extra exercises.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Barkly Campus.
