I believe tutors exist to help extend the foundations of what students are taught in schools, whether it be through analysing old concepts with a finer view or reinforcing newer concepts with carefully selected examples and analogies. I believe I am quite capable of exercising patience when a student is trying to understand the subject, trying to…

I believe the primary aim for a tutor should be to create a comfortable learning environment in which the student feels supported and able to ask questions freely. This will allow them to be more engaged with their learning and gain greater confidence in their abilities. I am able to effectively communicate with students of all ages, allowing me…

Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. One other important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and empathetic, build the student's confidence and…

Education involves more than just sitting through and able to understand the lessons. Building a good connection will allow the tutor to give the students a more enjoyable and engaging lesson. To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

Establishing meaningful relationships with students maximises their own academic output and the added social interaction increases the wellbeing and happiness of students. If I was given…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students in interact and engage with them, as this allows for the tutor to know the students and vice versa. Build their confidence; I think once a student has confidence in themselves, and trust that they have what it takes to tackle even a small part of a subject, their view of that subject completely shifts, and most often it makes learning more enjoyable. That inner confidence also makes it more likely they work harder and succeed, as well as overall…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

Firstly, a tutor must be kind and caring of the student's situation, and must be able to quickly determine the best method of teaching for that particular student. Only then can the tutor raise the motivation and enthusiasm of the student which is crucial in allowing them to learn at the optimum level. Once they are learning at this level, their…

I have had many experiences with teachers and tutors during my HSC years and most of them would end up explaining the questions. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to approach problems and questions on their own, such that they are not dependent on anyone when they encounter a difficult problem in the future. For example, to teach them how to look at a problem in many different ways, to reverse the problem and work…

The most important thing for a tutor is to not feed the student to information but to guide them as they learn. It's to teach the students how to learn independently and invoke within them a passion and a want for more learning and knowledge. To show students that studying is not a chore but a tool and a privilege that they can use. As a young…

A tutor must give confidence to the student that they can do well in a subject, regardless of their abilities. At the same time, a tutor must encourage the student to put in the work to succeed in the subject by instilling a love for the subject within student. A tutor must also be able to explain concepts in an easily digestible manner so…

Most important things a tutor can do are personalizing the learning, maximise students strength in a variety of topics, sharing their own HSC experiences which cures the anxiety of the student and most of all being patient with the student and explaining it to him as many times as he asks. Inside GlenhavenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Maya focused on critical path analysis for project management scenarios and practiced advanced statistics skills including calculating z-scores, standard deviation, and mean.

Year 11 student Oliver completed past HSC geometry and probability questions, working through selective school exam papers to strengthen understanding of key problem types.

For Year 9, Ethan revised area and volume calculations along with probability concepts using a mix of recent exam papers to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student missed several lessons due to TAFE commitments and now faces a backlog of material to catch up on—this has led to gaps in exam preparation, as noted: "Should catch up on lessons missed out due to TAFE asap."

A Year 8 student consistently avoided showing full working for algebra questions; the tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 4, another learner forgot about a scheduled lesson entirely. These moments meant time was spent recovering lost ground or correcting avoidable mistakes instead of moving forward with new content.

Recent Achievements

A Glenhaven tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with probability questions now independently draws accurate probability trees after just a brief demonstration.

In another session, a Year 9 student who once waited for hints began practicing past exam papers on her own initiative, identifying her weak spots before lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students surprised their tutor by tackling long division worksheets confidently on the very first attempt—a big shift from last term's nervousness around new maths topics. The lesson ended with her solving every question without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dural Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenhaven Public School.
