Listening. I think the best thing an english tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is help them feel confident enough in themselves and their abilities to succeed. A tutor should not simply give the answers to their students, but do what they can to provide the support for the students to reach the correct answers themselves. I am very patient; if a student cannot…

I believe that the most important thing an english tutor can do is to encourage a love of learning by helping the student see that they are already intelligent and have the capabilities to excel in their coursework if they apply themselves. Instilling a sense of confidence in students and making the learning process enjoyable is an enormous part…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to make the student love a subject because if this happens, the improvement will follow mechanically. A tutor should be able to make the student challenge himself and want to improve for his own sake. The tutor must also make sure that the morale of the student remains high as he…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

A tutor can do many things, but the most important one is give their students the confidence to apply what they have learned to the best of their ability. You can guide a student through a dozen practice questions, but ultimately, it is more important that they see the work as approachable and not impossible to do by themselves. As a tutor I am…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
