Inside BirchmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised adding and subtracting money amounts, then solved problems on finding the correct combination of notes and coins to pay for items.

In Year 8, Jack worked through area calculations for circles and sectors, as well as tackling questions involving the area of irregular shapes using diagrams to aid understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on algebraic techniques such as solving simultaneous equations and also spent time revising probability concepts with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's test performance was affected by time management during tests and not fully analysing each question—this led to missed marks despite knowing the content.

A Year 10 student avoided writing all steps for algebraic equations; as a tutor observed, he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors, so extra time was spent tracking mistakes rather than progressing.

In Year 5 maths, working out for addition and subtraction wasn't always written clearly, making it hard to check answers or spot where confusion started. On homework, incomplete division of large numbers left some problems unfinished.

Recent Achievements

One Birchmont tutor recently noticed a high school student who had previously rushed through maths tasks now taking time to write out all his working and double-check answers—something he rarely did before.

Another older student, who used to hesitate when faced with trigonometry problems, independently chose the correct formula (sin, cos, or tan) for each scenario after just one lesson on the topic.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student surprised her tutor by openly speaking up whenever confused, instead of staying quiet, making it much easier to address her learning gaps right away.
