Build interest. For younger student, most of them are still trying to find their interest in a certain field. The best thing I can do is to build interest with my humorous skill. Interest can lead students to an automatic learning mode, they will intake the related knowledge and digest them by themselves, and have the ability to do self-study,…

Build rapport - Rapport is a crucial element in all learning, and a positive, professional relationship can help foster an environment in which learning is maximized. Give accurate information - It…

Being able to teach a student enough material for them to be able to pass the class, that is what you are being paid to do. There are also many ineffible qualities that will set apart a good tutor from a great one. Such qualities include, understanding the student, being supportive of them and their emotions and ensuring the student is effectively…

In my opinion, the most important thing a physics tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I…

The most important things a physics tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam…

While I think it's important to assist students from an academic standpoint, I also think it's important for tutors to help students develop a sense of purpose in their studies. Teaching students to direct their motivations towards their goals, rather than solely their grades, can be just as important for their future as anything a physics tutor…

As a physics tutor, being able to teach the content, and help student gain knowledge is the most important and baseline requirement. As a physics tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths in…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. Listen. Every student excels in some ways and does not in others. This emphasises the importance for a physics tutor to present ideas in ways which allow the student to learn them in the most efficient and effective ways. This also ensures that the tutor does not repeat anything the student already knows and identifies what the student has yet to…

Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a physics tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do is help a student truly understand concepts rather than just memorising them, by explaining ideas clearly and in a way that suits the student's learning style. At the same time, a tutor should build the student's confidence. My main strength as a tutor is being able to explain complex ideas in a…

The most important thing I believe a physics tutor can do for the students is to understand and listen to them and their needs. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his/her student, it allows the tutor to personalise the learning for the student by incorporating connections to the student's interests. In addition, it…

I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental…

I think a physics tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a…

I think tutors need to make/ help students feel comfortable and less stressful with their studies in school. Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

Inside Black ForestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zara worked on comparing and ordering fractions using visual models, then practised multiplying and dividing fractions as well as converting between improper fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals.

Year 10 student Archie reviewed algebra test errors by revisiting factorising and expanding expressions, before moving on to ratio exercises from his laptop program.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lachlan explored trigonometric sine functions—focusing on amplitude, period, and phase shifts—alongside geometry work involving the properties of quadrilaterals and solving for unknowns using side lengths and angles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student's chemistry report was difficult to follow, with a tutor noting, "structure still not clearly and main point not communicated logically"—unclear layout made feedback hard to apply.

In Year 10 maths, skipping written steps meant algebra errors went unnoticed until review.

For a Year 8 research task, copy-pasting from sources without evaluating or organising ideas led to jumbled paragraphs and unclear argument flow.

A Year 5 student repeatedly left fractions homework incomplete, which slowed her progress in class when tackling new problems.

Without consistent practice and clearer work habits, confusion lingered longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

One Black Forest tutor noticed Molly now brings in her own draft assignments and openly points out which questions gave her trouble—something she used to hesitate with.

After some targeted practice on functions, she could independently identify domains and ranges by the end of the session.

In another case, Erin recently received an A+ for her maths investigation and took the initiative to plan ahead for upcoming assessments without prompting.

Meanwhile, Archie (Year 7) showed real growth by reviewing errors from his last test, then confidently solving similar algebra problems on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Goodwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Forest Primary School.
