I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a strong sense of confidence in their abilities. One strength, I feel, is that I have had experience in studying a very broad range of subjects - from classical music theory to forensic science - so I have been exposed to a great variety of teaching styles,…

To guide them towards their journey towards reaching goals and aspirations. Due to the education system constantly pushing students through grades regardless of results as well as very little discussion and revision upon mistakes after testing, I find helping a student be able to not only understand the individual question, but on top of that…

Being an engaging teacher and being able to adapt. As a tutor, your providing an outlet for them to learn when they are not getting enough out of their classroom. So you need to take an approach that will allow a student to push themselves without forcing them to. You also must be able to be creative and take different approaches if you recognize…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. I think self motivation and hard work are the key to success while mentoring…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

To encourage them to persevere even when they find their studies difficult. My opinion is that equipping them with the knowledge they need is only a small part of the job. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to believe in them. When a child's role model believes in them they begin to believe in themselves and, I believe, that is the first step to accomplishing great things. If a child believes that they have the ability to do something they are more inclined to put more effort…

Inside Blackburn SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan practised solving linear equations and worked on fraction summation and subtraction for fluency.

In Year 10, Emily focused on quadratic functions, including finding the equation of a line and tackling algebraic measurement problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Aisha prepared for her Mathematical Methods SAC by revising polynomials—specifically long division, remainder theorem, and factor theorem—and explored domain and range using set notation in function questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student was encouraged to organize and regularly update her summary book, but struggled to recall information from earlier in the year—"remembering the small information and organizing summary book" remained a challenge before exams.

Meanwhile, during Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work lacked clarity: "Need to add more step during the calculation," making it difficult to spot simplification errors.

Under SAC conditions in Year 12 Methods, one student second-guessed solutions and rushed into answers without planning—"he seemed to be second guessing himself and talking things over very rapidly." This led to confusion and missed marks when tackling multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn South tutor noted a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly requests help when stuck, which has made her algebra sessions much more productive.

A Year 11 student, after repeated struggles with graphing circular functions, began drawing the graphs accurately and independently identifying transformations without prompting.

In another session, a Year 7 student who once mixed up fraction operations is now confidently finding lowest common denominators and completing multi-step problems on her own.

Last week, one senior student collected past exams themselves to review weak areas before their upcoming assessment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke the Evangelist School.
