Patience and humility. When teaching, one must maintain composure or they will go off course. Additionally, the tutor should never believe that they are more knowledgeable than their students in all topics or that they know everything. Many teachers dislike it when their pupils contradict them and turn the situation into an ego conflict. This is…

This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

I believe a tutor is a person who is there to support, guide and encourage students to not just settle for an easy answer but question and discover new things. Inside Box Hill NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting fractions to decimals and back, as well as tackling worded ratio questions.

In Year 10, Ethan worked on Methods quadratics test preparation and revising how to complete the square for quadratic equations.

For Year 12 Specialist Maths, Michael focused on trigonometry with reciprocal functions and began learning about vectors, using step-by-step problem-solving with diagrams where needed.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, as one tutor noted, "left several questions blank on a recent measurement test," showing that time management during assessments is an obstacle—rushing led to skipped checks and unanswered items.

In Year 11 Physics, unfamiliarity with units and isolating variables in equations meant extra time was spent figuring out basics rather than tackling application problems.

For a younger primary student, muddled working out in long division made it easy to mix up digits or lose track of steps, especially under test conditions.

The frustration of erasing errors instead of clarifying working slowed progress when faced with trickier multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Box Hill North tutor noticed Sarah, a senior student, tackling integration: after initially struggling to reverse the "power rule," she's now independently applying u-substitution to solve more complex integrals.

In Year 10, Salvatore had previously hesitated with quadratic equations but recently managed to factorise tricky cases and even argued convincingly when no solutions existed—a big step from last term.

Meanwhile, Daniel in primary school used to need reminders on basic multiplication, but this week he multiplied three-digit numbers smoothly and converted ratios into decimals by himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Doncaster Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Box Hill North Primary School.
