Inside Briar HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sadé worked on long multiplication with 2-3 digit numbers and tackled multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Year 6 student Indie focused on mastering the 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables before applying this knowledge to solve long multiplication questions with larger numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie spent the lesson revising decimal operations—adding and subtracting decimals using vertical algorithms—and began practising these skills through worded problem scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to carry numbers during long multiplication, as noted: "she would occasionally forget to add the carried numbers or misalign the columns in her working out."

In Year 7 maths, one learner needed frequent reminders about area formulas and sometimes mixed them up, leading to extra time spent correcting answers instead of building fluency.

For a Year 8 student, challenges with interpreting worded problems meant they often needed guidance before attempting solutions.

When presented with mixed-order times tables in Year 6, another struggled to recall facts quickly, slowing progress on division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Briar Hill tutoring session saw a high school student, Sadé, who used to hesitate with long division now tackle harder questions confidently and even worked efficiently with divisors like 12 and 20.

Another win came from Indie in Year 6: she had previously struggled to apply short division independently but recently solved multi-digit problems by herself, showing much more self-assurance.

In Year 4 English, John—who once guessed at unfamiliar words—has started sounding them out methodically when reading aloud, making it through passages that were stumbling blocks before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Briar Hill Primary School.
