I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A lot of the time, students know more than they think they just need someone to guide them, encourage them, and help them see their own progress. It’s also really important to create a safe, supportive space where they feel comfortable asking questions…

Geography Tutor The Vines, WA
Explain the topics in a way that the student understands, for example some students will require a topic to be broken into several small parts to be able to understand it. My strengths as a tutor are that I am very patient, I am flexible with my delivery skills, I am friendly and I am approachable and easy to talk to. All of these skills I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient, stay calm at all times and try new ways to explain the work if they don’t understand. My strengths are that I can break the work down enough so that anyone can understand. I’m a very patient person so the students will never feel pressured or stressed. I’m also…

Inside BrigadoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student James worked on the circumference and perimeter of circles and semicircles, then reviewed fractions, decimals, percentages, and index laws from a previous test.

In Year 8, Jeanuel focused on algebra substitution using workbook problems as well as converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages for homework.

Meanwhile, Year 10 sessions included trigonometry with sine, cosine, and tangent—alongside practice with inverse functions—to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

James does not take notes in class, which left him struggling to recall formulas and apply methods like circumference calculations.

When homework was set on algebraic simplification and measurement conversions, he often did not complete it, leading to missed practice and confusion during sessions.

In senior maths (Year 11), another student froze when facing unfamiliar problems instead of writing down known information or structuring his working; as a tutor noted, "he needs to write down what he knows, what he wants to work out and then start."

This avoidance led to lost time and growing uncertainty mid-assessment.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brigadoon noticed that James, a Year 7 student who previously rushed through perimeter problems and skipped showing his working, now writes each step carefully and has improved his test mark by 10%.

In Year 10 maths, Jeanuel used to hesitate when starting new questions but has started reading carefully for a logical starting point before solving; he's also begun using mental maths more confidently and shows his working without prompting.

At the senior level, one student recently approached challenging trigonometric ratio questions independently, applying formulas accurately and finishing all assigned practice problems without needing extra hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Midland Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Upper Swan Primary School.
