Collaborating with them. The tutor-student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. Keeping this at the forefront of lessons together will also promote important qualities such as patience and good listening skills that allow your student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express concerns or make mistakes. This also helps tutors…

A good tutor takes the time to understand these aspects and tailors their teaching approach accordingly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand him/her. By understanding the student, the teacher can learn how to approach and support the student based on their needs and requirements. I am a great communicator who can creatively explain and express ideas in ways that students can learn quickly and easily. I also have a…

As a tutor I think it is important that you know that your students are all different and have different learning paces and styles and therefore it is important that you treat your students with respect and understanding and help them grow physically, emotionally, socially and also help them grow as a person who will one day contribute into the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence. In my experience most students had the intrinsic abilities to do well at their studies but faltered due to perceived nervousness and pressure. It is hugely important to show the students that you believe in their abilities and that there is no problem that…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be organised and be understanding. A tutor is unlike a classroom teacher, as we are given the opportunity to work solely 1:1 with a student. Therefore, understanding a student's needs, wants and goals is imperative. Similarly, being organised and having a clear goal is equally as important.…

Inside CardiniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ruby focused on decimals—rounding, adding, and dividing—and then applied these skills to solve currency and discount problems.

For Year 8, Josh tackled algebraic equations using backtracking methods and practiced graphing straight lines by finding their equations from Cartesian plane diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily revised trigonometry concepts through homework questions and worksheets, before moving on to solving linear equations involving variables on both sides.

Recent Challenges

During Year 8 algebra and ratio work, Eugene often did not submit completed homework by the due date, making it difficult to address errors promptly.

In Year 10 trigonometry revision, written solutions were sometimes messy—steps and working became hard to follow, as noted: "It was tricky to check for calculation errors when workings weren't clearly laid out."

For a recent senior exam preparation session, Eugene relied heavily on his notes rather than attempting problems independently first. This meant less time spent building confidence in unfamiliar questions and more time retracing earlier steps.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cardinia recently saw a few real learning shifts worth noting. In Year 10, Eugene moved from occasionally missing homework deadlines to now completing all assigned tasks on time and even scored full marks on recent linear equations assignments—this turnaround means class time is now focused on extending his skills instead of catching up.

A Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help during sessions has started reaching out between lessons when stuck, leading to noticeably fewer repeated errors in her trigonometry work.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with attention to detail began double-checking answers independently and caught her own mistakes during a mixed numbers exercise.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Pakenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cardinia Primary School.
