Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

Beyond academic assistance, it involves nurturing confidence, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. The process of learning is what may vary from person to person. My core strength would be the ability to explain any concept, no matter how complex. I can break it down to simple bits…

be compassionate with your students and believe in them. I believe students tend to believe a lot of what their teacher's think about them and they look up to their tutors. I think teachers should genuinely care about their students and their mental wellbeing, not just their grades. Moreover, teachers should always be patient and never lose their tamper no matter what. Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
