Inside Chermside WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Grace focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced factorising and simplifying expressions using worked examples.

Year 9 student Liam completed a statistics assignment by constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots, then compared data sets using box plots to analyse spread and median.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia tackled the start of her statistics unit by distinguishing between categorical and numerical data (including ordinal vs nominal, continuous vs discrete), working through classification questions with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student left key math materials at school due to the swimming carnival and couldn't review speed formula strategies as planned—this delay meant less practice ahead of an upcoming exam.

A Year 10 learner, after receiving quiz results, "didn't fully look through quiz results—will do that next time," missing a chance to address specific errors before moving on.

For a senior student working on biology, mixing up which body system barriers belonged in each line of defence led to repeated confusion across multiple systems; the overlapping topics seemed overwhelming without regular review.

In Year 11 maths, one student forgot to transfer formulas between their grid and lined books: "Could help with remembering what formulas you may need for the exam."

These moments show how organization lapses or not responding promptly to feedback can quietly limit progress or create last-minute stress when exams approach.

Recent Achievements

A Chermside West tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Skyla, independently prepare questions ahead of time and now actively ask for help—something she previously hesitated to do.

In Year 8 maths, Claudia started recognising mistakes in converting units between lessons and now corrects them on her own during problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a primary school student, Lila, who used to get stuck placing negative numbers on a number line, can now confidently order both positive and negative values without prompting and completed her latest number line activity with no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chermside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Craigslea State High School.
