The most important things I can do are allow students to understand content and to ask questions freely. Students must be able to consolidate learning with me and I would be able to provide them with the necessary and specific information and learning strategies that allow them to accomplish their academic goals. I am very patient and very…

I feel that the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to act as a source of information throughout their time of studying. School can be, and often is, stressful, even if you love the subjects being taught and the teachers teaching them. Therefore, I think the role of a tutor hinges largely on offering support and passing…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

Be persistent and encouraging, as well as being clear and concise. I believe that tutors should be patient and accepting. This will help both the tutor and the student. My strengths are in English. I am extremely attentive to detail, and am very good at explaining concepts. I am patient and kind so I love seeing people take their time to…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is making sure they have enough confidence and belief in themselves to replicate the work you do together, by themselves. This in the end is the most beneficial skill when it comes to school, because self doubt holds back so many students. Being able to break down concepts into…

I think one of the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence that they're able to achieve their goals. Having that self-confidence makes students much more willing to study and work hard because they know that the goals they have set are actually achievable and aren't an insurmountable…

The most important things an english tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, create a safe space for questions, and teach in a way that suits their learning style. I know how competitive and burdensome academics can be, especially for students in high achieving environments ( e.g Melbourne high), so I believe being a pillar of…

I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. Naturally, an english tutor's main priority is to provide profound and thorough knowledge through clear communication. This includes patience and listening, aforementioned, and trust. As a tutor, it is…

A crucial aspect an english tutor can provide for a student would be shaping a student's inner monologue. Many students who may need tutoring aren't always lacking in knowledge, but rather lacking in confidence, thus having a tutor to reassure and encourage them to develop upon their self-belief. Furthermore, another important aspect would be…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is offer an environment where they can comfortably learn and raise any concerns or questions they might have. Provide adequate resources on the subject so the student can go back over them when not being tutored. Also make sure they understand the content and don’t leave the session feeling confused or lost about anything, all while showing…

Inside Croydon HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zoe focused on using pi to calculate the area, radius, and perimeter of circles, and applied these concepts through worked examples.

For Year 9, Marcus completed exam revision covering quadrilaterals, negative fractions, percentage change, decimal termination, the unitary method, and calculating volumes.

In Year 10, Emily practised solving linear equations and graphing them on coordinate axes to strengthen her understanding of relationships between algebraic expressions and their visual representations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student showed difficulty planning exam responses, often not reading questions fully or prioritizing those with the most marks—"would jump to solving before double-checking what was asked," as noted. This led to missed details in multi-step problems.

In Year 9, a tendency to only practice familiar types of linear equations meant newer concepts like graph transformations weren't consolidated, making it harder to apply them under test conditions.

A Year 7 student sometimes avoided showing full working for unit conversions, which made catching small arithmetic errors trickier during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Croydon Hills tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over mistakes now taking time to review errors and correct them independently, especially on quadratic equations.

A senior student in Year 12, who previously hesitated with calculus, has started using derivative graphs to check her answers—showing much more initiative during sessions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with the concept of pi last term can now explain where it comes from and why it's useful in measuring circles, even sharing an example without prompting.

Last session finished with him choosing his own word problem about area to solve.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Croydon Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Croydon Hills Primary School.
