I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. Learning new things can be tricky and scary which is why a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning pace, be able to communicate thoroughly and also make the learning experience a fun one I am a very patient person which I…

As i was mentoring students at Curtin i got to realise that being a form of support not only academically but also forming a relationship with the student is the most important thing a tutor can do. A tutor does not just teach a student a particular subject. I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. A good tutor can give a student motivation and techniques to achieve not only in the tutored subject, but in…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. A…

Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. Jacqui, Daglish

Inside DaglishTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lily focused on division of fractions and key algebra skills, including graphing and basic trigonometry.

For Year 10, Ava practiced volume and surface area calculations for composite shapes and tackled negative indices with some review of algebraic expressions.

In Year 11, Jack reviewed factorisation techniques alongside the first three index laws, using worked examples to solidify understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided homework tasks, leading to extra time spent re-explaining algebra and index laws during sessions ("did not attempt the homework set for him last lesson").

In Year 11 Chemistry, difficulty organizing notes meant that concepts like equilibrium graphs had to be revisited across multiple lessons before progress was made.

One Year 8 learner struggled with fractions and negative numbers, yet rarely wrote out working—this often hid misunderstandings until errors appeared in final answers.

Meanwhile, a senior English student hesitated to write ideas down due to perfectionism; as one tutor put it, "needed more confidence putting English ideas on paper."

Recent Achievements

A Daglish tutor noticed one high school student, previously hesitant to show her working, now confidently explains each step aloud while solving complex algebra problems—a real shift from her earlier guesswork.

Another senior student has started tackling challenging essay questions independently, using specific quotes and refining arguments after struggling last term with structure and evidence.

In a recent Year 4 session, a younger learner who used to rush through multiplication is now pausing to write out every step, reducing mistakes and showing more careful reasoning.

Last week, she completed all division problems without skipping steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Shenton College.
