It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Although explaining concepts is definitely useful, I believe it is a tutor's responsibility to show students how to enjoy studying and do it more effectively. Helping students mentally through encouragement and giving them tips on how to thrive in any avenue of study and learning will benefit them far more than just learning a formula or…

The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. Studying for exams can get very stressful and students forget the joy of learning something and their natural curiosity. If a tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

A tutor can encourage a student to better themselves, to reach simple goals and then challenge them further to be the best. I feel achieved when the student starts asking complex question as the day passes by, to the point where you have to give the answer a second thought. And that is when I know i have achieved being an excellent tutor. I…

Inside DenistoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Amber focused on loans and annuities, including using loan repayment tables and completing worked examples from Chapter 4.

Year 10 student tackled trigonometry topics such as sine and cosine rules, bearings, and obtuse angles, with practice using past HSC questions to reinforce understanding.

For a primary example, Year 5 student Zeke worked through addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators and mixed numerals, along with worded problems involving algebra.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student reviewing trigonometry and algebra tended to "guess what to do" instead of clearly writing out each step—this often led to confusion when checking answers later.

Another senior student in Year 12 focused on practicing familiar topics for HSC revision but avoided more challenging chapters, making it harder to identify weak areas before exams.

For a Year 8 student, inconsistent attention to decimal places and significant figures meant calculator errors crept into assessment tasks.

As noted by one tutor, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," causing small issues to snowball during tests.

Recent Achievements

One Denistone tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle tricky bearings questions; after some targeted practice, she began recognising patterns and could now approach difficult exam-style problems with more independence.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who used to rush through homework without checking is now consistently completing assignments carefully and making far fewer errors.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once struggled with times tables has recently mastered both the 4's and 5's and was able to recite them fluently during the lesson without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Therese's Catholic Primary School.
