The most important things a tutor can do for a student is motivating them to be the best version of themselves in many aspects, and not only academically. The discipline tutors can instill to their learners can be implemented in many other areas of their lives. Providing as a source of motivation gives students a sense of purpose of what they're…

I believe my strength would be my inquisitiveness for more knowledge and learning and an attitude to learn while being open to exchange knowldge on the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them the joys of learning which not only improves their grades but also enables them to progressively and continuously yearn for a drive for knowledge that they can utilize in their ongoing future. Through my experience as a mentor as a Melbourne High School student, I was fortunate…

It is about explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them, encouraging them when they are struggling, and finding ways to keep them engaged and interested. A good tutor helps…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

By helping them get a good grip of the foundation of the subject or topic. This is why I enjoy tutoring as well, as it lets me revise. I believe that with a good foundation the student will be more capable of catching on quickly to more harder topics and won't find it frustrating even if they initially struggle with it. Another important quality…

The ultimate intention of tutoring, I believe, is to guide students to the point at which they can become independent learners and like tutors, teach other students. Inside DovetonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Biology with Priya involved exploring biomacromolecules, particularly nucleic acids, and beginning work on gene expression by reviewing transcription and translation.

For Year 8 Maths, Zara tackled computation with integers in preparation for her test and then moved into geometry, focusing on angles, lines, and the concept of pi as an irrational number using a variety of worksheets.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Ayaan worked through introductory algebra topics including adding like terms and expanding brackets, practising distributive law problems to strengthen his understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student hesitated to elaborate on the reactions behind polymer formation, as a tutor noted, "more detail was needed to understand the processes." This slowed lesson pacing and meant key concepts weren't fully explored.

In Year 11 Biology, missing or unclear note-taking made it harder for one student to distinguish gene expression terms—notes were provided, but confusion lingered.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 General Maths student lacked confidence in tackling worded problems and often paused mid-solution; her uncertainty led to unfinished answers.

When time management slipped in senior science lessons, essential content like enzyme denaturation remained uncovered until the next session.

Recent Achievements

A Doveton tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from feeling overwhelmed by algebra to independently solving complex expressions using the distributive law—a big step, as they'd previously hesitated to try without guidance.

In Year 11 biology, another student who struggled with gene expression began taking detailed notes and confidently answered questions about transcription, showing a real leap in understanding.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to guess on times tables now recalls them easily and works through order of operations problems solo; by lesson's end, they completed all set questions without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Doveton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Family School.
