The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is improve their confidence. Lack of confidence in one's academic ability leads to many problems including underperformance and lack of enjoyment. If a student feels confident with the skills they are learning it will greatly improve not only their academic results; but also their general…

According to me, a tutor should be a good listener. Students are from different backgrounds and different cultures. As a tutor, it is necessary to bring all students under one umbrella and give proper guidance. Students are learners. I always provide enough time for them to try and I always make them give it a go. This enables the students'…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only teach them a certain concept but rather equip them with the tools to be able to learn the concept and future concepts themselves. Whether that may be going through study strategies or instilling motivation, the main crux of the job should be so that the student can…

A good tutor needs to empathize with their student. They should listen to your child and understand their needs and challenges. Doing this will build a good rapport and ensure that your child feels valued. School struggles can indicate that there may be personal issues affecting the student’s academic performance. The most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student to appreciate and be enthusiastic towards a subject. It creates enthusiasm and willingness to learn more both inside and outside of the classroom. This principle alone is the best thing a tutor can do. I would teach the very fundamentals of a topic. Something a lot of tutors simply…

The most important thing as a tutor is to guide the students think positively. Inside Eden HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Austin revised multiplication and division one-step algebra equations and practiced identifying proper, improper, and mixed fractions using diagrams.

In Year 7, Eli tackled addition and subtraction of integers along with methods for operating with prime numbers, while also revisiting fraction concepts from the previous week.

Meanwhile, Alex in Year 8 focused on simplifying algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and solving one-step equations involving all four operations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping written steps during practice made it harder to spot sign errors—one tutor noted, "he worked out answers mentally but missed key negatives."

For a Year 11 student preparing for an upcoming maths test, anxiety about performance led to rushing through transformations questions and leaving some working blank.

In Year 3 comprehension homework, not reading instructions fully resulted in only partial answers being given.

Across both primary and senior years, several students struggled with neatness in written work and often left stories or solutions poorly formatted. This led to extra time spent reworking assignments rather than progressing further.

Recent Achievements

One Eden Hill tutor recently saw Zev, a high school student, start taking responsibility for his learning by requesting breaks to stay focused and asking for more challenging times tables—he's now attempting problems independently before seeking help.

Another older student, after struggling with algebraic expressions in the past, managed to expand expressions using the Distributive Law without prompting and showed real persistence on tricky questions.

Meanwhile, Grace in primary school has begun writing full sentences unprompted in her comprehension work; last session she planned and wrote an opening paragraph for her story with clear structure and creative ideas.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bassendean Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eden Hill Primary School.
