The most important thing a tutor can do, is to assist students help themselves or to assist them so that they can become an independent learner, and thus, no longer need a tutor. A tutor must also remain enthused and passionate, so that they are able to keep their students motivated and eager to learn. Tutors should always have a positive…

I consider developing their ways of thinking towards a point that they can lead themselves, linking reality problems with the teaching materials, listening to their needs and guiding students to know their future opportunities are the most important things a tutor can do. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that learners would feel safe and secured when they are being attended to. Aside from that, a tutor should also consider the transfer of knowledge where tutors act as facilitators for the students learning. I believe that my strengths as a tutor are my desire to produce outstanding…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is create lessons around a student's skillset and ability. If they are struggling with a certain topic, I like to focus my attention on this area in my lesson so they may be able to get a better understanding. I believe one of my strengths is being able to explain a concept in different ways so that…

If you can make your students shine and bring their own strengths to the forefront, you've won. You have to believe in them before they believe in themselves and if you're in tune with your student and can bring out all their hidden gems, there's nothing that could compare. I believe it is the confidence that tutors can develop in their students, so that the stress and nervousness is lessened when it comes to taking the end-of-year exams, or even just a simple test. Also, to be able to cultivate an understanding and mutual relationship with the student so that there is no shyness or hesitation when it comes to asking…

Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
