I think the most important thing an english tutor can be is willing to help. When a tutor genuinely wants to see a student thrive and improve, it significantly increases the quality of their service and helps students feel heard and valued. This is far more effective than when a tutor's effort is slack. I can communicate with individuals clearly…

Ensuring your student is feeling comfortable and confident to try new things is paramount. A student needs to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. They need to feel safe and comfortable to make mistakes. I also try to incorporate the interests of a student into learning where possible. E.g. turning a math problem…

I think it is most important to be patient with the students and to ensure they properly understand the concepts being taught before moving onto the next topic. You must also be understanding and empathic with the students to show you can appreciate where they are coming from or why they are thinking a certain way whether it is in the way they…

With this feedback, providing very specific examples of how to improve instead of saying generalised criticisms. Create links with stuff that's already been learnt so that students…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to not only be able to teach them the material, but to also be able to mentor them. I believe the most important thing for an english tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I…

Successful tutors can build strong, personal relationships with their students. As they can teach to the student's strengths, they are able to minimize the student's weaknesses. One of the most vital things an english tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
