Firstly to help a student understand the concepts, theory and ideas of the subject. And then to help them see the relevance of those concepts, theory and ideas. Because once they see how relevant those ideas are in our world today, then they'll remember it. I like to ask meaningful questions, questions which reveal to me the students perspective…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do is provide a judgment-free, open space where students feel comfortable asking any question - even those that may seem obvious. This not only builds a strong rapport with the student but also helps solidify their understanding. My biggest strength would be my ability to listen to the student. I…

Being a role model and a guide for the students is the best thing a biology tutor can do. This is because actions speak louder than words and by bieng a good and positive influence a tutor can win the heart and mind of the students and in that way the flow of information between them will become very smooth and easy. I try to explain what students…

As a high school leaver, I consider providing support and trust as well as accurate academic knowledge to be the most important thing that a biology tutor can do for a student. Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a biology tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Online learning my 9 year old son found challenging. He excels in class room learning and during the school closures his development learning in maths suffered. He has only had a couple of tutor sessions and already his teacher an I have noticed an improvement is his confidence to attempt math problems he finds challenging.
Judy, Fairfield

Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Jafar focused on writing persuasive texts and stories using prompts, while also building skills in calculating change and interpreting graphs.

For Year 9, Sienna practised solving simultaneous equations and explored applications of graphing inequalities, often working through examples step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sam covered the sine rule and cosine rule in trigonometry, alongside finding exact values for common angles by applying formulae to real-world problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly left differentiation rules half-memorised, leading to confusion when tackling derivatives of constants or linear functions; as a tutor noted, "he still needs practice with basic differentiation rules—he needs to be able to solve specific problems without my help."

In contrast, a Year 8 student's homework was sometimes incomplete or done incorrectly, requiring time in lessons to finish missed work rather than move forward.

Meanwhile, during persuasive writing in Year 6 English, one learner struggled to turn ideas into sentences without prompts and often responded with "I don't know" before attempting answers. Confidence and independence suffered in these moments.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to attempt simultaneous equations without help, independently set up and solved worded problems using both elimination and substitution methods for the first time.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who often avoided class participation is now actively asking relevant questions during lessons on trigonometric applications in three dimensions, showing genuine engagement with new content.

For a younger learner in primary school, after initially finding subtraction across zeroes confusing, he was able to confidently explain his solution process back to the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fairfield Public School.
