I believe the most important things a tutor can do is offer the correct support educationally but also help them build their confidence to a point they can begin to work things out for themselves without guidance. It is important to remain professional at all times but also be a tutor who is willing to understand the circumstances surrounding the…

If a tutor can improve a students grades then that is excellent. However, I believe if a tutor can spark an interest and develop a passion for the subject within that student then the results and attitude will speak for themselves. Begrudgingly working through exercise after exercise will only get a student so far. Give a man a fish and you feed…

Inside Fingal BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Eva practised division and multiplication through targeted exercises and number tests.

In Year 9, Sophie focused on algebraic equations and inequalities, with extra time spent clarifying each step using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack reviewed financial maths topics such as depreciation and shares/dividend yield, tackling both basic concepts and more challenging application questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, Liz was too reliant on plugging numbers into formulas, especially with financial maths worded problems, which led to confusion when faced with unfamiliar question styles. When a new style appeared, she became nervous and less confident in her responses.

In Year 9, Lara's working out was often messy and not well-organized—she rushed through distance/speed/time questions and struggled to backcheck answers, causing small but repeated errors.

For Danika (Year 10), persistent "lazy thinking" showed when she avoided multi-step algebra or didn't attempt harder test items unless prompted; this meant gaps remained in critical understanding and confidence dropped after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Fingal Bay noticed Danika has started organising her class notes and consistently flags tricky questions to discuss—something she used to avoid.

Another win came when Liz, preparing for HSC maths, tackled challenging z-score problems on her own after previously hesitating with exam-style questions; she even explained her reasoning back to the tutor without prompting.

In a recent session, Lara independently solved a linear equation problem using new study techniques she'd just learned and had always relied on hints before, showing real growth in self-directed problem solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tomaree Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Shoal Bay Public School.
