I strongly believe that a good tutor can change the entire perception of the subject for a student. Throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to be in the presence of inspiring teachers because of which I developed a strong liking for my subjects. A good tutor is one who can understand the needs of the student and execute it in the most…

A tutor is very important in providing support outside school. Ensuring that the student finds learning to be fun and interesting, in my opinion, is more important than focusing on higher grades. As a tutor, it is important to cultivate interest in students and create knowledge. I am great at teaching students with learning disabilities and…

A tutor should create a supportive environment, identify gaps in understanding, and guide students to think independently rather than just giving answers. Building confidence, encouraging questions, and helping students develop strong problem-solving skills are key. My strengths include explaining complex ideas in a simple and structured way,…

The most importat thing I believe is to be available for a student when he/she needs you. It is also important to be accessible to them by answering all their doubts and be there for them till they understand a certain concept. I can be a student's friend and help them understand every concept by being their confidante. I can make them enjoy their…

Helping a student gain the confidence that they need is the most important thing a tutor can help with. Not understanding a math problem? A tutor can help with that. Needing motivation to study? A tutor can help with that. I am someone who is very patient. Without a student understanding a certain concept, I wil not move on. Being an outstanding…

Have patience and faith in the student when they themselves maybe demotivated by difficult subject matter. They should try to foster deeper understanding of the subject matter rather than simply asking them to memorise certain technical terms or…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel genuinely safe and unembarrassed about not knowing something. Once that pressure is gone, they’re actually able to think, ask questions, and learn. A good tutor also pays attention to how a student thinks - not just what they get wrong - and adjusts the explanation to fit…

While a tutor's contracted duty is to assist a student academically, I believe a tutor can do something far more in the process. A tutor can be the reason a student develops a greater sense of purpose at school. A tutor can be the reason a student falls in love with a subject and chooses to pursue it for the rest of their life. All in all, a tutor…

The most important things that we can do for student is helping them to overcome the topics/subjects that they find hard to understand which eventually they lose passion of that subject. Hence, it is very important for us to assist the students and being patient is very important in this process. It is a tutor job to explain the topic, find out…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide different of point of views to a student. I realized that the best tutors are not the one that knows the most but the ones that gives the best point of view to a subject to a student. Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. The tutor should be really compassionate to their students and is always there whenever the student needs help. Even though the tutor is busy and tired, a wise tutor…

I strongly believe every student has it in them to excel should they choose to . As a tutor my primary responsibility is to create an interest towards that subject , so they are able draw parallels to it with their day to day activities. In addition to this every student has a different method of learning. Identifying it & helping them understand…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
