To listen to them, I find that they often know best their own struggles, and it can be incredibly valuable to listen to them so that they can feel like they're being heard and helped. This can also help avoid the kids feeling like they are pointlessly covering areas they are already confident in. I have babysat and informally tutored for many…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

A tutor is basically a role model for the student. If a tutor can quickly solve anonymous problem then student can definitely be motivated and solve there sums. Additionally, Tutor should also connect with the student so that student can discuss the issues faced by them before the exam. Tutors should conduct regular test and provide quick…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts in a way they understand, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s not just about helping with the subject, but also encouraging them to believe in their abilities. My strengths as a tutor are…

As a tutor, I believing reviewing older concepts and understanding what the student needs from me is most important. Rather than correcting their mistakes, it is important that I allow the student to work it out and learn their concepts thoroughly to avoid any future confusion. The most important thing any tutor can do for a student is to first create a comfortable and trusting learning environment. I strongly believe every student has it in them to excel should they choose to . As a tutor my primary responsibility is to create an interest towards that subject , so they are able draw parallels to it with their day to day activities. In addition to this every student has a different method of learning. Identifying it & helping them understand…

I consider the most thing a tutor can do for a student is personalisation and to instill belief in the students' capability to continue improving and bettering themselves. The 'most important' aspect for any particular student should also be personalised to the student, whether it is identifying gaps in their knowledge, honing the fundamentals of…

The most important thing in tutoring is that the tutor should not force their way of thinking and understanding on the student, instead they should build up from the foundation of knowledge that the student already has, guiding them to find a solution that they can understand. This not only makes the learning process for the student more…

Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to develop their critical thinking ability, where the student learn to think for themselves, through which one could also effectively develop the art of asking questions and learning. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
