The most important thing a tutor can do is not only to support a student but to make them feel as though they have accomplished what they set out to achieve, even if it is a small goal, as long as it gets fulfilled. I believe that I can personalise the amount of help I provide to a student, no matter their abilities. This will allow me to ensure…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be someone that can be there for a student when they need help emotionally, as well as academically. For many, being there for someone emotionally can be as simple as not knowing about their personal lives and just being there purely to help, while some students, I have found, need to talk about…

I think a tutor needs to be able to create that working relationship with a student, to show them how fun learning can be. When shown how interesting these things can be, students become much more motivated to engage and learn, and the 1-on-1 support that tutoring provides gives these children the tools they need to excel. I have 18 months of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. This is because most of the time students self doubts leads to them struggling with content not a lack of ability. I believe that it is important to help students to understand how academic skills can lead them to their goals, and to encourage them to work hard, doing their best to make the most of opportunities that come to them. Ezymath tutoring made an effort to provide my daughter with a tutor who had a maths specialty. Ella was polite, punctual and spent the time to understand and assist my daughter in her weak areas.

Inside Heidelberg HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily explored factorising and substitution in complex algebraic expressions to build foundational skills.

For Year 10, Marcus worked through scatter plots and used Pearson's coefficient to interpret bivariate data visually and numerically.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia focused on least square regression lines for statistical analysis, as well as reviewing data transformation methods relevant for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes forgot essential materials—her maths books and calculator—which meant gaps in tracking what concepts she'd struggled with.

In VCE, one student's written solutions for statistics were "hard to follow," making it tough to pinpoint errors or show full working for exam marks.

Several times across Years 7–10, answers were mathematically correct but missed the actual question requirement; as one tutor noted, "she answered with a valid calculation, but not what was asked."

When students misinterpret questions or leave their resources behind, class time gets spent on clarifying basics rather than pushing ahead.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg Heights noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, now asks for clarification whenever something doesn't make sense and then applies the feedback to solve practice questions accurately.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student managed to get through an entire chapter ahead of their class for the first time—last term they struggled just to keep pace.

For a younger learner, one primary school student who was reluctant to try tougher maths problems is now willing to attempt more complicated questions independently and often persists until finding a solution.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
