For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Ensuring that a student has confidence and self belief can be just as…

Tutors can be a great source of inspiration to a student to do more and learn more. Inside Helena ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emmanuel reviewed **narrative writing techniques** and improved his story structure, then focused on correcting spelling errors from homework.

Year 8 student Daniel tackled **Ratios and Index Laws** using a recent practice test to target misconceptions, also practicing applying index laws in different contexts.

For Year 9, Sarah worked on **Linear Relations** by plotting points on the Cartesian plane and interpreting graph features, while also revising coordinate geometry through example questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student did not take notes on the subject and came unprepared for a test, which left her struggling with definitions and unable to recall key material; as one tutor observed, "she did not focus on definitions."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping important words in questions led to incomplete answers—misreading cost marks when interpreting what was actually being asked.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student repeatedly left homework unfinished and was distracted during lessons, making it hard to reinforce new skills.

For a younger child, anxiety about mistakes in spelling tests often resulted in shutting down before tasks were complete.

Recent Achievements

One Helena Valley tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help now clearly explaining when she's confused, allowing the tutor to address gaps straight away.

In Year 8 maths, another student started using highlighters and writing out key information after struggling with multi-step problems—she finished her test more confidently than before.

A younger primary student, once easily distracted during numeracy tasks, recently completed her times tables without reminders and chose to check her own answers for accuracy at the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Boya Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Helena Valley Primary School.
