Be able to answer questions, both about the content and work as well as study habits and tips to do well on tests and exams. A tutor must also be able to teach in various ways to suit the students learning methods. Recently completing year 12 I have good study tips and I am determined to help the student and will aim to teach in which ever way…

Understand their way of learning, and adjusting to the student to accomodate them. I have had multiple experiences where my tutor would try to teach their method and force that method upon me. However, it is important to recognise the difference in the way different people learn, and not force upon a way of learning and hope that way of learning…

They have to understand the student's abilities and how they learn and adapt to that. They need to make the student feel like they're learning and enjoying what they're learning. The tutor also needs to ensure the student has a firm understanding of the topic. I am very patient and always try to change the way I teach to suit the needs of the…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do for their student is to continuously encourage regardless of the results they get. Your studies can impact you emotionally at times especially when you don't get the specific grade or result you were hoping for. Thus, as a tutor I think you have a responsibility to also support your students…

I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do is give students the right direction and support so they can build confidence and excel on their own. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I’m always willing to learn. If there’s something I’m not fully confident about, I make time to understand it properly—because I believe…

A tutor can provide much greater flexibility than a teacher in a class room setting. They can identify the specific strengths and weaknesses of a student and cater to them to make the most beneficial learning experience they can. I like to break down mathematical concepts and remove as much of the distracting mathematical language as I can, so…

To answer any queries first - then go ahead with the class concepts. It is so important that the student learns the foundations of their chosen subject and that these foundation principles are practiced and solid. Without these foundation, students will struggle to understand further and more complex problems, so it's up to the tutor to make sure…

Not all students are modelled the same way. Some are able to learn by studying the books while others require a lot of practice. Hence I believe that teaching the student how to study based on his or her strengths is the best thing a physics tutor can do and I will strive to achieve that at all costs. I spend a lot of time communicating with the…

I believe the most important factor is allowing students freedom of answering a question in their own way and not limiting them to the words of a textbook. Inside HurstbridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Indie worked on polynomials and their differentiation, then reviewed integration techniques for estimating areas under curves.

A Year 9 student focused on interpreting scatterplots and completed the statistics unit with hands-on graphing activities.

For Year 11, Alex tackled applications of integration and differentiation, along with solving simultaneous equations using algebraic methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a calculator for multiplication and division, as noted: "even though the calculator is allowed in class we still need to work on knowing to do it by heart." This led to slower progress when asked to solve without digital support.

In Year 7, one student skipped writing out full steps in basic maths problems—"skips over steps instead of slowly working through them"—which made errors harder to spot and fix.

Meanwhile, a senior student faced setbacks when worded trigonometry questions were left incomplete, with missed practice leading to lower confidence during timed assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Hurstbridge tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to ask questions now coming prepared with her own problem areas, ready to discuss and even tackling complex topics independently once discussion began.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw them finish all assigned homework before the lesson—a first for this student—and confidently apply the average speed formula in unfamiliar ways.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to guess quietly now solves word problems aloud, explaining their thinking and asking for help when stuck instead of staying silent.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hurstbridge Primary School.
