A tutor plays a very important role in the development of a student. The student is more informal and feels free to express his/her concerns, rather than at school. As it is a one to one interaction, a tutor has to focus completely and also expect the student to give 100%. Every student is different with their intelligence, maturity and attitude.…

Responding and adapting to their learning needs. It is extremely important to be able to tailor to students' needs in tutoring such as adapting the work, demonstrating various ways to explain a skill or method, and even just linking prior knowledge to help the student understand the task better. I believe it's essential for the tutor to be able to…

Help him to go further and improve himself by providing better advice than a classroom teacher. As a tutor, I would be able to focus on my student to understand his strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. With this knowledge the tutor could provide advices focused on how to correct the student and allow him to have better scores easily. I'm…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student to overcome the fear of failure and give the student motivation that he/she can achieve anything by consistent practice. Help in gaining the knowledge conceptually and not by just mugging up text books so that the student can be absolutely confident with the particular…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build her/his confidence to overcome their limitations to learn in a standard way. For this reason, it is important to acknowledge the special needs of each student, as they are all unique individuals learning at a different pace, in a different way. I am a patient and…

Inside JacanaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mary worked on adding fractions with different denominators and tackled factors and multiples, finishing a tricky homework sheet together.

Year 8 student Bill focused on reducing fractions through targeted practice and discussed division in relation to multiplication, using examples from recent lessons.

For Year 9, Alex revised multiplying and dividing negative numbers, including a spelling test and vocabulary worksheet for literacy reinforcement within the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left English essays incomplete for homework, particularly after receiving a disappointing mark; as noted, "he seemed distressed and avoided starting the next essay," which led to missed opportunities for feedback and improvement.

In Year 7 Maths, another student consistently forgot to complete assigned revision sheets before a fractions test—this meant class time was spent on catch-up rather than tackling new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preferred to attempt only familiar problems in algebra revision, shying away from more challenging questions and limiting exposure to essential concepts needed for exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

One Jacana tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he openly voices questions when stuck on essay planning and even suggests what he'd like to review next.

A high schooler tackling long division had previously needed lots of guidance but can now finish complex worded problems independently after practicing with homework.

In a primary session, a Year 4 student who once got frustrated by spelling mistakes now takes them in stride and finishes tests with far fewer corrections, even celebrating when he spelled most tricky words right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Basketball Broadmeadows.
