Being able to provide support. Sometimes, a student just needs someone to talk to- and knowing that they've been through the same thing that they have, it empowers them and encourages them to make proactive decisions in their learning. I view the foundation of effective mentorship as one of trust, mutual respect, and goal driven progress that is…

One of my biggest strengths as an english tutor is my ability to break down complex topics into simple, relatable explanations. I also genuinely care about my students’ progress, and I make an effort to understand their learning styles, struggles, and goals. I know that everyone learns differently, so I adapt my approach to fit their needs. Most…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to allow them to build up their own confidence in the subject that they are struggling in, as well as allowing them not to see the subject as a chore or something to avoid, but as an enjoyable and fun task that would be highly useful for the future! My strengths are that I would…

According to me, it is to be open and provide a comfortable environment to the students, where they can study and share their thoughts without hesitating. Apart from this, it is to make learning a fun process by teaching in a more fun way, this includes doing different activities to make children understand the concepts, etc. I do possess great…

As stated, giving the correct guidance and the motivation for the correct way to study is extremely important. As is well knwon, we can walk a horse to the water but cannot make him drink it, similarly giving the syllabus content and teaching the subject is important, however, the most important part it to mame sure the student knows in the first…

For me the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the maximum support and help they can offer. More importantly, a tutor is successful when their students succeed and achieve their goals and therefore the most important role of a tutor is to be the individual that guides them to that success. I consider…

A tutor frames the way the students learn different things. As being experienced studying the same things, he/she can make the pathway of learning quite easier for the students. A tutor can be a friend and at the same time motivate students and teach them how to stay motivated. Not only this, an english tutor can change the life of students by…

Inside KalamundaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack focused on percentage word problems and converting between decimals and fractions, using practical examples to reinforce understanding.

For Year 9, Emily worked through linear equations—including graphing—and explored the properties of number sequences.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Noah practiced solving quadratic equations by factorising and used turning point formulas to analyse graphs of parabolas.

Recent Challenges

In recent high school maths sessions, several process habits have affected progress.

In Year 10, messy working and unclear layout—such as skipping steps in rearranging formulas—meant errors went unnoticed until checking at the end ("needs to be neater rather than rushing through things, as sometimes he can't read his own writing").

During a Year 11 trigonometry revision, over-reliance on previously seen problem types led to difficulties when unfamiliar worded questions appeared; the student hesitated instead of adapting strategies.

Earlier, a Year 7 session showed that attempts to solve equations mentally (without written working) resulted in confusion with negative numbers and lost marks on tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kalamunda noted a high school student who once hesitated to speak up is now confidently explaining his problem-solving steps aloud, especially while working through negative numbers—a big shift from earlier sessions where he'd stay quiet and guess.

Another secondary student surprised herself by choosing to tackle linear equations first, despite past frustration with the topic; this time she asked thoughtful questions about why certain methods work rather than just following instructions.

In a primary session, one student applied a new trick for the 11 times table and started reworking problems using his own logic without prompting, finishing all calculations independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kalamunda Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kalamunda Primary School.
