I struggled myself as a student, and I think I can relate to certain obstacles of a student. Although, I did excel in high school as I worked hard. I am proficient in both hard sciences and social…

Improve their confidence in the field of study is very important. In year 11 I found myself questioning my mathematical skills and this often made me perform bad in tests because I'd doubt myself and make silly mistakes. Over the summer break before year 12 I had a private tutor who helped me improve my confidence and in year 12 I found out that I…

Relating to my strengths as an economics tutor, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is giving a thorough and concise explanation of every single concept to a student, in a way that isn't only just memorizing, but also using their own logic and thought process to understand and learn on their own as they go. This must all be applied…

I think the most important thing is to recognise the child's unique strengths and weaknesses and build from there. Making sure to communicate well and simplify topics so that they can feel confident and be approachable, so they ask lots of questions. I think my strengths as a tutor is being able to break down difficult concepts into smaller chunks…

Inside KelmscottTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sarah reviewed mean, median, and mode in statistics and completed practice on pie graphs and line graphs.

In Year 8, James focused on multiplying and simplifying algebraic fractions as well as using Pythagoras' theorem to solve for missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily worked through solving linear equations with two unknowns and practiced transposing equations to isolate variables efficiently.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student relied heavily on their calculator during classpad work, leading to gaps in manual problem-solving; as noted, "some questions or tests…require him to show his workings."

For a Year 9 algebra session, untidy layout and incomplete working made it hard to track errors—initial messy setting out led to mistakes when converting percentages.

In a Year 8 statistics lesson, homework was left unfinished and not brought to the session.

A primary student's missing notebook delayed the start of her maths tutoring by several minutes, disrupting focus right from the beginning of the session.

Recent Achievements

In a Kelmscott tutoring session, there was a noticeable shift in one high school student, Owen, who used to get stuck on algebra and linear equations but now asks for extra homework and recently taught himself how to find the distance between two points—a topic he once found confusing.

Another win came from Miriam (Year 9), who not only brought her own questions to sessions but has started completing her homework with hardly any errors after previously struggling to keep up.

For a younger primary student, Tawny showed new independence by correcting her own unit mistakes when calculating areas—something she needed lots of guidance on before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kelmscott Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kelmscott Primary School.
