I think the most important thing for a tutor is to be able to clarify the concepts and ensure that the students are able to built upon these concepts and become proficient. The tutor should be able to take students' understanding to the point where they should be able to understand and solve the problems by themselves. In terms of strengths, I am…

If the tutor can give the student space to figure out the solutions to their problems and only step in once the student shows signs of struggling it is more beneficial for the student as this method will allow the student to learn to solve problems on their own. I am able to adapt my approach to teaching concepts for each student, meaning that I…

Adjusting their teaching style to suit the way that student learns. Sometimes, explaining the content for a long time will work, but most of the time it doesn't. Including the student in the lesson is very important. I used tutoring in highschool, so I have a good idea of how to frame my lessons and adjust…

Inside LawntonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tasha worked on surface area calculations and reviewed all key exam topics to consolidate understanding.

For Year 10, Cameron focused on calculating gradients and finding x- and y-intercepts in linear equations, including using the gradient-intercept method for graph sketching.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia practised solving trigonometric functions and revisited derivatives as part of her advanced mathematics studies.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student left most worded questions blank during a maths revision session—he only attempted them after the tutor modelled each step, revealing difficulty with independent problem solving under test conditions.

For a Year 6 English task, another student provided minimal responses in comprehension activities, "using the amount of lines as a clue to the depth needed in the answer" rather than fully engaging with the text.

In senior maths, reliance on guessing equations for assignments ("guessing equations to see if it works in her favour") slowed progress and left key methods unmastered before assessment deadlines.

Recent Achievements

A Lawnton tutor recently noticed Kiana arriving with a list of tricky maths questions she'd struggled with in class; after working through each one together, she could explain the solutions herself and even finished early.

In another session, Clancey started off unsure about rearranging equations but by the end was confidently solving them without help—something he couldn't do before.

With a younger student, Tamia has begun to spot her own grammar mistakes while reading aloud and now corrects them independently, rather than waiting for prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathpine Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lawnton State School.
