The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them, encourage them and listen to them. Instilling fear in students and shaming them for not knowing a concept or for not understanding something is unacceptable. A tutor needs to be someone that makes their students confident and builds them up as they receive enough pressures…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Many kids struggle at school and with their parents , be it academically or otherwise, this could be due to a number of reasons. However, from my personal experience I have found it to be the lack to communication between the child and the adults that…

For a tutor to make a significant difference to a student's academic performance, I highly believe that they should be able to teach a certain topic in a multitude of ways, in order to assist with the various learning preferences of students. The adaptability of a tutor is crucial to becoming the greatest assistance for a student, as this creates…

the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student, is to teach the how to learn content, it is to teach them to be self sufficient, switched on and motivated. It is to make the canvas blank before filling it with knowledge that is new and unknown. My ideology for tutoring is to teach a kid how to learn and then make him or her learn it. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is approach teaching in a holistic way so a student can develop necessary skills - like interpersonal skills, to strive not only during high school, but once they graduate. A tutor should be helping their student to excel in their studies in a way that is supplementary to what is taught in school. Lastly, a…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is understand the learning pattern and style of the student. Every student learns differently, simply using one method is not enough. As I try to see, I try to understand how different students learn and understand different content. Through the process, i try to find what is the most optimal way…

Being patient with the student is very important because it may take time for them to grasp new topics and understand the method to solve a problem. As a tutor you have to walk the student through this process and be supportive and calm instead of getting upset or blunt with the student because this may affect their self confidence and focus. I…

I find it important for students to know and feel that their individual needs are heard, understood and attended to. It would be most important to follow through all plans, tailored to their needs, with actions that allow the students to realise their progress. There a many key things that I believe a tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. Inside Lysterfield SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack worked through algebraic manipulation and the multiplication rules for indices, focusing on practice problems to build fluency.

Year 10 student Emily explored quadratic expressions and equations, including solving by factorisation and using examples from her textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on one-variable statistics—summarising data sets and constructing box plots and histograms using her calculator to interpret real data.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, one student skipped completing all chapter questions and struggled to use the CAS calculator efficiently during timed tasks—"must practice using the calculator to improve timing."

In another VCE context, a student avoided reviewing SAC errors or identifying weak areas, leading to repeated uncertainty in assessments.

A Year 8 learner relied on guessing answers without showing reasoning in worded problems, which left gaps unaddressed.

For a Year 4 maths session, missing focus led to forgotten subtraction steps with carry overs; as one tutor observed, "she tended to forget subtraction with carry overs," causing calculation errors that slowed progress.

Recent Achievements

One Lysterfield South tutor noticed a big change with a Year 10 student who had struggled to connect theory with practice in algebra; now, he's independently rearranging equations and can explain why each step matters, instead of just following along.

In Year 7 maths, another student used to guess at negative number problems but recently started pausing to check her logic before answering—she even asked for more challenging questions last session.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who found fractions confusing is now confidently identifying equivalent fractions on number lines and quickly shaded the correct parts without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Endeavour Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Maranatha Christian School.
