In my opinion, the most importing things that a tutor can do is to make the students feel engaged and welcomed. In particular, learning should be a joyful experience for students instead of a burden. This means the student not only perform the tasks which the tutor instruct them to, but to be more open and curious to ask any questions outside the…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

A good tutor will identify the student’s learning style so that they are able to present information in a way that has the greatest effect.Tutors should ascertain which building blocks the student is missing in their foundation of knowledge. Filling in these missing building blocks will establish a strong foundation on which they can build.A…

I think listening to the student is the most important thing a tutor can do. Whether it is simply listening to troubles they are having with a class or with life, listening to the student is very important. As someone who has studied a wide range of topics throughout high school and college, I feel like I have a wide range of expertise.…

I believe that patience is definitely a major aspect of tutoring. There is nothing worse than being expected to understand something and being unable to go back and revisit it, simply because the tutor is impatient or not understanding/empathetic enough. Another important aspect I would say would have to be teaching slowly where needed and not…

To ensure that the student grasps the concept behind the science. Because when a student understands something fully with an example to explain it to someone else, it means they will remember it for a lifetime. The nexus of my focus is on sharing knowledge, note taking skills and personality…

Through my time at university, I have found the ability to be patient is what separates my current tutors apart. A willingness to stop and answer questions, that some may be too scared to ask, has certainly improved my learning opportunities. The notion of ‘no stupid questions’ in my Power Electronics course this semester has been a great…

Inside MacquarieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily worked on visualising numbers with creative representations to boost addition speed and practiced small operations using cards.

In Year 8, Jacob focused on turning mixed numbers into improper fractions and did quick mental calculations for addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophie tackled questions involving linear algebra by rearranging equations and working with fractions from her recent lessons.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 mathematics, one student relied heavily on flashcards for times tables but found oral recall difficult; when asked "2 x 7" without visual aids, hesitation was noticeable. As a tutor noted, "she performs very well, almost instantly, when we use them, whereas if we're doing purely oral exercises, it is a bit harder."

Meanwhile, in Year 10 Maths Methods, incomplete homework (e.g., VCE 2006 Paper and CH2/CH6/CH16 questions) meant less exposure to exam-style problems and limited feedback opportunities.

In Year 12, messy note-taking left gaps in revision chapters—key ideas went unrecorded during complex differentiation practice.

Recent Achievements

One Macquarie tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 4 student who used to rely heavily on her fingers for basic maths, but after practicing verbal games and using flashcards, she now answers multiplication questions without counting out loud.

In a recent high school session, a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with index laws completed all related problems independently and even asked to try harder questions next time.

Another high schooler has started consistently finishing most of their assigned questions correctly during sessions—a big change from earlier lessons when they hesitated to attempt problems on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Macquarie Primary School.
