According to me, a tutor must collaborate with his students to set realistic goals for them in the short as well as long term. Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning journey.…

Teaching minds, touching hearts, transforming lives. Aside from the mastery of the subject being taught, developing a genuine bond between tutor and student, helping them apply or understand the gravity or importance of their study and why they should not take it for granted. In other words, helping them not only in the four corners of the…

We just wanted to thank Thomas Ban for the wonderful work he has done with Jasmine this year. We feel that she has received these grades due to Thomas tutoring. He has challenged and pushed her to work harder and improve her maths. He is also extremely professional and courteous.

Inside MayfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler worked through addition and subtraction of decimals, rounding numbers, and strategies for adding and subtracting fractions as part of his maths booklet.

For Year 11, Erika focused on rates and ratios problems before moving into bearings and trigonometry applications, then discussed the anatomy of male and female reproductive systems in biology, including hormones in the menstrual cycle.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student revised financial mathematics topics like compound interest and depreciation alongside normal distribution questions using Z-scores and real-world scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, one student's workbook "could be a little more organised and tidy," making it difficult to review steps and correct errors during lessons.

In Year 11, inconsistent completion of homework and minimal study outside class—"approx. 1 hour weekly"—left major gaps in Financial Maths and Bivariate Data, as noted after a missed assignment.

A Year 12 student admitted confusion about their study timetable, leading to incomplete homework on non-right angle trigonometry; the misunderstanding was only clarified mid-lesson.

Across these examples, scattered notes or missing work meant valuable lesson time was spent retracing old ground rather than advancing skills.

Recent Achievements

One Mayfield tutor observed that Jackson, a Year 12 student, has moved from needing frequent help with interpreting complex exam questions to independently completing high-level network and normal distribution problems—a big step since earlier sessions where missing key parts of questions was common.

In Year 11 Biology, Erika showed new initiative by asking insightful questions about DNA replication and confidently explaining the impacts of different mutagens on genetic diseases, demonstrating much more self-directed engagement than before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who previously struggled with time-telling now completes worksheets unaided and uses pictures to quickly work out fraction equivalence—she finished all her telling-the-time problems without any prompts this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columban's Primary School.
