As stated, one of the most important things a tutor can do for their student is to allow the student to enjoy what they're doing. This will then help in creating a comfortable environment where the tutor can teach and the student can efficiently take in what is being taught. As a tutor I find myself to be able to quickly adapt to the student that…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make the content understandable, and encourage independent thinking. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but about helping them develop the skills and mindset to learn on their own. I think my strengths as a tutor include being…

Inside Melton WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoe worked through a diagnostic quiz on fractions, decimals, multiplication, and division to pinpoint strengths and areas needing focus.

For Year 10, Ray revised BODMAS with multi-step numerical expressions and practiced calculating mean, median, and mode in preparation for an upcoming class test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily tackled polynomial functions by learning how to factorise them using the remainder theorem and explored solving simultaneous equations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing out steps—"he can do the calculations in his head," a tutor noted—but this habit made it difficult to catch errors and explain reasoning.

Another, in Year 10 English, struggled to expand on ideas when drafting paragraphs; skipping brainstorming left stories underdeveloped and unclear.

In Year 11 advanced maths, reliance on calculators during equation rearrangement masked confusion with negative signs.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt column addition independently, often erasing mistakes instead of learning from them. This reluctance slowed progress and left gaps unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Melton West noticed Kaan, a high school student, moving from needing reminders on statistics to independently applying strategies for mean, median, and probability—he now tackles frequency tables with far less hesitation than before.

Another win came when Colin, also in high school, started generating his own questions during creative writing planning; this shift from waiting for prompts to branching out ideas marks a big step in his engagement.

Meanwhile, Aaylah in Year 3 no longer skips over words as she reads aloud and recently managed double-digit addition almost entirely on her own after practicing with the whiteboard.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Melton Library & Learning Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melton Secondary College.
