Such as exam papers from different schools and providing a thorough explanation about the concept they do not understand. I am bilingual, my fluency in both English and Mandarin can help both local students and English…

A great tutor must comprehend what it's like to be a student who might lack confidence, or just not understand the content. They should also encourage pupils to try their best on every question before seeking assistance. To better grasp students' misunderstandings and mistakes, the tutor should also be a patient listener. Each tutorial, the tutor…

Understanding each students' specific needs and the different ways they learn, as well as approaching with a positive attitude whilst assisting their learning - not putting students down if questions were incorrectly done (projecting your own emotions; anger, frustration outwards), or if they didn't do as well on an exam. Ultimately, the most…

Allow students to investigate something they cannot find without a tutor, this includes bringing new ideas and thoughts to students. Learning the methods not the question. I enjoyed teaching others and through out my teaching experience with my friends I gain a lot of experience on how to teach in a way that makes complex ideas easily understood.…

Inside MortdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student worked on adding and subtracting fractions, including changing between mixed numerals and improper fractions, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions.

Year 8 student Kirsten focused on geometry topics like identifying corresponding, alternate, and co-interior angles, plus solving for missing angles in triangles using angle sum properties.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Reece tackled advanced mechanics by practising projectile motion questions and developed skills in rearranging the subject of equations to support his HSC exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's written work on percentages often lacked clear steps, making it difficult to see where confusion with multiplying and dividing began—he tends to forget the process but remembers when guided.

A Year 11 physics student struggled to complete questions without direct prompting; missing out on independent problem-solving meant "finishing the questions alone was an issue."

In Year 7, another student's trouble with identifying straight angles showed up as incomplete solutions when not given examples or pointers. This left them unable to check their own answers during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mortdale noticed a real turnaround for one Year 12 student who used to get stuck on modern physics problems—after focused practice, he can now handle electric and magnetic field questions with much less prompting.

Another high schooler has begun taking her own notes during sessions, something she previously avoided; this shift means she's recognising gaps in her understanding and actively working to fix them.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant about mixed numerals now confidently switches between improper fractions and mixed numbers and breezes through decimal addition tasks without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penshurst Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penshurst West Public School.
