The best thing a tutor can do for a student is it reduce the fear of studying/learning a subject. Mathematics is a tough subject and it is important tutors take the right approach when they teach that subject. I am a huge believer in teachers being friends with their students. My biggest strength is that I get along with students and try and…

It is crucial to break down complex ideas into manageable sections and go through these thoroughly. A tutor should also create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Beyond…

I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As school can be stressful, being supportive and persistent toward the student is beneficial and can make them more receptive to wanting to learn. Having patience is also very important for tutors as some students may not understand a concept and the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel as if they have tried their absolute hardest and have done their best. A student should feel confident and empowered going into their next exam or assessment as they have acquired a new understanding of the subject. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow not only as a student, but as a person. In my previous experience, I have found that oftentimes a student who achieves average academic results often does so due to fears of failure, or perhaps disinterest in the subject. I believe that the tutor can be paramount…

I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. For example, an English teacher might teach them poetic terms by getting the student to write out definitions. If a students doesn't…

Inside NudgeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Grace focused on probability by constructing Venn diagrams and completing probability tables for a class project.

For Year 10, Olivia worked through bearings and non-right angled triangle problems in trigonometry using sine and cosine rules, drawing diagrams to help solve worded questions.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Ben practiced multiplication skills and factor trees while also working on clear written solutions to improve accuracy with multi-step maths problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled to lay out her maths working clearly, often scattering calculations across the page, making it difficult to check for errors—"writing all over the page meant she lost track of steps in area problems."

In Year 10, a student relied heavily on her calculator but sometimes entered values incorrectly during trigonometry tasks, leading to repeated miscalculations.

Meanwhile, a senior student faced confusion interpreting worded questions in probability and geometry; skipping the step of drawing diagrams made these tasks much harder than necessary.

These habits resulted in wasted time retracing work and growing frustration when answers didn't match expectations.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nudgee noticed some great steps forward this week. One Year 10 student, after struggling with simultaneous equations, managed to solve a set independently and explained their process out loud—something they'd hesitated to do before.

In a Year 8 session, another student who used to rush through maths problems began checking their answers independently with the times table chart without being prompted, then corrected mistakes on their own.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once guessed at unfamiliar words started asking for help proactively as soon as she got stuck during reading time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Banyo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius' Primary School.
