The most important thing a tutor can do would be to personalise the study plan and instruction to ensure that the student's weaknesses and strengths are being addressed and to have the patience to explain concepts repeatedly if the student doesn't understand it at first. Often times, students seek outside tutoring as they feel the help they…

Teaching the content required within a particular subject is only the start of what a tutor can do for their student, but teaching them how to apply everything they have learned to not only the subject at hand but how they are tested within that subject. Since going through the HSC I have learned that some subjects teach content in a very…

The most fundamental thing is to teach them about the subject itself. More importantly, is the influence of your value and behaviour on students. Your compassion and dedication can motivate students to fulfill their potential and achieve more than they've expected. First of all, I'm really talented at maths. I can help students to understand…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is building their confidence; developing their knowledge, skills, and understanding; and promoting independence in learning. The tutor should create a safe space for the student to make mistakes and learn new things. This will develop their resilience and self-confidence. Likewise, a tutor…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

Being the middle ground between self-learning and learning in a classroom. A tutor not only teaches but functions as an advisor of sorts because a tutor was once or still is a student. Because of that, he or she can acutely understand the mindset of another student, since they may have had that same mindset only recently. I am articulate, being…

Guiding them and showing them how to learn! The most important thing would be being able to be flexible in your teaching strategy so that a kid who may not have understood the concept, understands it in a different way. Being able to do this without losing your temper at a kid who doesn't understand is an underappreciated skill according to me because usually people think of it as more…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to walk side by side with them. Although it is a certain subject that we teach to our students, it would be a shame if we just left it at that. I believe that tutors should walk with their students past just the subject, teaching them life skills as well. My biggest strength as a tutor…

Inside OatlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zoe worked on division with remainders and decimals, as well as revising multiplication skills.

In Year 9, Anna tackled Pythagoras' Theorem with a focus on worded problems and applied rounding to decimal places using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Michael practiced algebraic techniques for completing the square and reviewed integration concepts from past exam papers to strengthen his calculus understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left last week's maths homework incomplete and, during the lesson, skimmed questions too quickly—"she missed details by not reading the question properly," as a tutor noted.

In Year 12 Extension English, another student submitted an essay draft without filling out the provided planning template, resulting in missed opportunities for deeper analysis and extra evidence.

Meanwhile, messy or minimal working was evident in a Year 7 measurement task; unclear layout slowed progress on area and volume problems.

These moments led to repeated corrections or weaker responses under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Oatlands tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through worded problems now taking time to consider whether to divide or multiply, showing real care in her approach and accuracy.

In a recent high school English session, another student—who previously struggled to find literary techniques independently—was able to identify several metaphors and provide clear evidence from the text without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to ask for help during maths activities is now confidently letting the tutor know when she's unsure, rather than guessing her way through new material.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dundas Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oatlands Public School.
