One of the most important things an english tutor can do is to inspire students through education. The world of education is so vast and enriching, both primary and secondary school is a long journey and for my students to enjoy education rather than drag their feet through the process is one of my biggest hopes and goals. There are endless…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do is to be flexible with their different learning styles. Often when students ask for a tutor it's because they are unable to learn using the method their teacher uses. It's a tutor's job to rework concepts in a way so that students can benefit from it. Simply repeating what a teacher has said…

A tutor should be the mentor for students and guide them the way rather than just spoon-feeding them with the content. Also, an english tutor should always remain unbiased towards the students. Talking about my strengths, I am capable of teaching students in such a way that they are able to relate to what I am explaining in the first go and I…

I believe that active communication and listening skills is key to a students' improvement in their learning. Without it, there is no point in teaching something that is finally going to ended up misunderstood or even not understood at all. Receiving and providing active feedbacks between students and tutor is essential for the tutor to provide…

To me, it is being able to connect with a student in a way they can be comfortable with asking any sorts of questions about the subject without the fear of being judged. I understand how confusing maths can be sometimes, so in order for any academic progress to be made, the student should feel engaged and happy to ask questions. I believe my…

It is important to be available as often as required, and to be friendly and approachable. A student should feel safe around their tutor, and be able to ask them any question. They should also build the student's confidence and critical thinking abilities, encouraging independence. Lastly, teaching effective study skills and offering constructive feedback helps foster long-term success. My…

Pass on knowledge about how to become self-sufficient and break down work so that it's less overwhelming. Moreover, teaching students how to learn actively, rather than passively is incredibly significant. It is what will help prepare them for VCE, tertiary education, and just general adult life. Additionally, it is important that tutors…

Being fully attentive and aware of the student. I know from experience that while in a classroom it’s very easy for a teacher to overlook a student asking a question, or even for the teacher to not answer the question as they misunderstood. The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to build confidence. The most important things an english tutor can do for a student is be organised and be understanding. A tutor is unlike a classroom teacher, as we are given the opportunity to work solely 1:1 with a student. Therefore, understanding a student's needs, wants and goals is imperative. Similarly, being organised and having a clear goal is equally as…

Inside Pakenham UpperTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mehar focused on measuring and classifying angles using a protractor, as well as revising long division methods.

In Year 11, Gavin worked through graphing logarithmic and exponential functions by analysing how transformations shift graphs, and also practised anti-differentiation techniques for calculus.

Alexander in Year 12 prepared for a physics exam by tackling kinematics problems involving constant acceleration and forces on inclined planes, along with reviewing momentum transfer during collisions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived without completed homework or organised notes, leading to gaps when revising area and perimeter formulas—"he did not have his own notes written down but follows teacher notes," making it harder to review later.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student's struggle with matrix multiplication revealed that incomplete personal notes and missing practice meant new concepts like transformations remained confusing.

During a Year 12 Physics session, test errors traced back to misapplied formulas—without deeper understanding or careful revision, he substituted the wrong values despite memorising terms. These moments left students stalled mid-question, unsure how to move forward independently.

Recent Achievements

One Pakenham Upper tutor noticed Omita, a primary student, now justifies his answers out loud when challenged on tricky area problems—a big step up from when he would simply guess and move on.

In Year 10 maths, Gavin showed new independence with quadratic inequalities; after struggling to link the discriminant to solution numbers last term, he confidently explained the reasoning behind his answers without prompting.

Meanwhile, Alex (Year 12) recalled not only which kinematic equations apply to different motion scenarios but also why energy conservation matters—something he'd previously mixed up—demonstrating this by choosing the right formula for a complex practice exam question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cardinia Mobile Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pakenham Hills Primary School.
