My maths teacher always said that giving students 'a spark in their chest to learn' was the most valuable thing that a teacher could give to students. I absolutely agree. I was once a student who only studied because I knew that had to but, I had several teachers in my high school & university that gave me a spark and passion to LEARN rather than…

Treat the student in a nonthreatening, calm manner. Respect the student and their thought processes and engage them in the material. Do not be hyper-critical. It is the tutors responsibility to ensure the student fully understands a concept, i.e. they are able to apply knowledge by themselves especially in areas such as mathematics and physics. I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand how they learn and help them in a way that will help them understand. I also think it is important to help the student, to some extent, enjoy their work so they are motivated to improve and continue learning. I believe my greatest strength is understanding different…

A tutor is someone under whose guidance a child is going to learn academically and also real life lessons. A tutor should himself/herself execute the things that is expected out of the child. A tutor should be clear with his/her concepts because it will enhance the overall efficiency of learning of the student. A tutor along with being a tutor…

Be patient and listen to your students. Gather feedback about what it is that they do not understand about the particular subject. From then on, hone in on what they know and do not know, and teach them from there. Rarely does a tutor know what the student is actually struggling with unless they listen and start from the root cause. I have great…

Personally, I feel the most important thing for a tutor is patience to teach as well as learn from students. Not everyone has the skill to be patient enough to make sure that a concept is clear , nor the effort to make it clear by teaching until the student understands I do not have much experiences in teaching, however I enjoy and love teaching…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be easily available to them. First essential thing is that, needs to understand the student's ability and capacity. Later, should make sure that student is being comfortable to share their doubts and thoughts and we as a tutor should asses them and work on what aspects could drive their understability high and makes their doubts clear. I think that a tutor can really help students communicate their problems better, support them as well as help them understand their confusions or where they were going wrong. I pretty sure that the most important things a tutor can do for students are: 1. Always go at the pace of the students and advance together in each topic you teach. 2. Give students the confidence to ask you any questions they may have in class or after class, no matter how simple it may seem. 3. Always offer the easiest and most dynamic method…

Inside RockleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sam worked through simultaneous equations and expanded brackets, focusing on clear step-by-step solutions.

For Year 11, Ava tackled trigonometric functions including sine and cosine waves using unit circles, as well as converting between degrees and radians.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack concentrated on differentiation rules—specifically the chain rule, quotient rule, and product rule—to strengthen calculus foundations with targeted examples from recent assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student repeatedly lost track of numbers mid-calculation during algebra tasks; as the tutor noted, "numbers would slip out of her head as she was solving problems and she would have to backtrack," which often led to correct concepts but wrong answers.

In a Year 8 session, a student fell back on simply adding or multiplying any given numbers when stuck, instead of working through problem steps—a short-term crutch that limited deeper understanding.

After-school fatigue in a senior student left him freezing up or disengaged at key moments, making it harder to complete multi-step questions under pressure.

Recent Achievements

In a Rocklea tutoring session, Zoe, a high schooler with ADHD and dyscalculia, experimented with colour-coded notes and visual cues—she now finds it easier to interpret complex expressions and even solved cross multiplication problems that previously tripped her up.

Shakya, also in high school, showed a shift from uncertainty to self-reliance; despite being unwell, she completed all her homework independently and applied linear equations to real-world scenarios like GPS signals.

Meanwhile, Rama in Year 5 surprised her tutor by generating creative sentences quickly when prompted—something she'd hesitated with before—and spelling advanced words without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rocklea State School.
