A tutor can offer student great flexibility in teaching materials and methods that may not be available in a classroom setting. Going through the student's difficulties one by one, with personal attention, makes a significant difference to a learning environment. I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

Tutors can help students build the confidence and skills to be stronger independent and collaborative learners. It's not about teaching rote information or doing the difficult processing work for students, but rather to help diagnose and address the missing links that stand in the way of students moving forward in their own learning. I am a…

I think the three most important things a tutor can do are understanding the student’s specific learning needs, patiently supporting students as they get to grips with a process or concept and knowing the subject content and study design. These priorities ensure that the content of tutoring sessions is relevant, delivered in a sensitive timely…

I understand that a tutor can significantly reduce the burden of academic chores off the shoulders of a student and hence support the efforts towards more productive activities. The success factor, to a large extend, depends upon the individual effort and determination of the student. However, tutor can ensure that the student's effort is used…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire them. I don't believe studying should be a chore. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is enable them to see the beauty and fun of any subject rather than letting them focus on the anxiety or stress that comes with its difficulty. If a tutor can allow a student to not only do well in their subject, but also enjoy it, that to…

The best thing a tutor can do is to listen carefully and empathise with their students. Learning can be very difficult and it is very helpful, for a tutor, to realise that each individual has their own learning style, motivation, and attitudes towards any subject. Most importantly learner's wellbeing should be an important factor when tutoring. I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student, is to show the easiest method to learn the content of the subject. A tutor can teach the way to decode the subject matter. Once, the tutor teach the method to learn and the student understand that method, a student should become independent to learn similar topics. I think a tutor…

Lisa, Seddon

Inside SeddonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mia focused on converting denominators to add and subtract fractions, as well as simplifying fractions for clarity.

In Year 9, Ethan practiced solving algebraic equations for x and reviewed strategies for factorising quadratic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby worked through the distributive law of surds in algebra and reinforced her understanding by graphing linear lines using different methods.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a barrier for one Year 8 student—"not attempted," the note read, which limited progress with dividing and multiplying by factors of ten.

In Year 9 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes kept in students' heads rather than on paper, so key sign errors or steps were missed ("pen to paper" needed).

A senior student brought neither book nor notes to revision, making it harder to practice manipulating equations and use feedback.

One Year 11 learner hesitated to check work after each step; small mistakes went unnoticed until the end, meaning extra time spent fixing avoidable errors.

Recent Achievements

A Seddon tutor noticed that one Year 11 student, after initially struggling with understanding the inflation formula and the difference between purchasing power and current value, began breaking down complex questions independently and set up a personal study log to track his progress—a big shift from needing step-by-step direction.

Another high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help now initiates discussions about challenging algebraic problems and has started keeping organised notes in a dedicated rules book.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed spelling is now confidently rewriting definitions and reading them aloud after targeted literacy practice during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Mechanics' Institute Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Pilgrim Campus.
