A tutor can assist student in understanding the concepts more clearly and a biology tutor can mold a student's focus on the subject. A tutor is a constant reminder for a student to choose the right techniques for study. A tutor can explain the nuances of not just learning concepts but also to reciprocate them in the exam. My patience with students…

The most important thing one can do as a biology tutor is making sure their students needs are being met with. If a student requires extra attention or help in a certain area, it is the tutors responsibility to know that and give the required help . I also believe it is vital for a tutor to have a personalised study plan for each student, based on…

I believe the most important thing is to be well-prepared ahead of the session and have good knowledge of the subject. In addition to these, the tutor must be empathetic to the child's needs, effectively communicate and also tailor the teaching methods as every student is different and has varied learning needs and capabilities. This will also…

I think that one of the important things a biology tutor can do for a student is to first understand how much the student already knows and where they are struggling. This helps the tutor guide the step-by step to improve their understanding of each topic. Another important thing is patience because learning takes time, and it a calm and…

I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do is make an overall postive impact. Just being an academic support for a student who is struggling can create impacts more meaningful than grades or results. Helping them change their attitude towards learning is the kind of positive change that lasts beyond the classroom. I am a really…

A tutor should be able to promote a growth mindset, where the student can learn from their own mistakes. It is important to assess the student and understand strengths and weaknesses before starting a lesson, and it is also crucial to assess the student after a lesson to measure the progress. A good tutor will be able to build confidence in the…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a biology tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

Inside SomertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sohaila revisited the split strategy for three-digit by two-digit multiplication, followed by targeted division problems to reinforce prior learning.

Year 10 student Keshan focused on rearranging equations in coordinate geometry, solving for gradient and y-intercept, and practiced expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using step-by-step examples.

For Year 6, Zoyi worked through an English assessment that included comprehension, spelling, grammar, and paragraph writing skills to address areas of difficulty.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student often struggled to connect evidence to broader themes in text responses; as one tutor observed, "she tended to describe events rather than analyse their impact." This limited the depth of her essays.

In Year 7 mathematics, another student needed reminders to complete assigned homework and showed difficulty managing time during multi-step algebra tasks—unfinished questions meant missed feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner's written work was hard to follow due to inconsistent punctuation and paragraphing, making it challenging for her to proofread effectively. By lesson's end, fatigue sometimes led to skipped steps or incomplete practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Somerton noticed one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to seek clarification, now independently identifies her weak spots in English essays and actively asks for targeted feedback—something she never did before.

In Year 7 maths, a student who once guessed at multiplication strategies is now confidently applying the split strategy to tackle both two-digit by two-digit and three-digit by two-digit problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner recently began solving worded maths questions on her own after initially struggling to decode what each question was really asking, finishing an entire worksheet with just one prompt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh Park Primary School.
