Teaching them the curriculum and making them score higher is not alone enough making them realize what they are capable of. I believe that a tutor is there to support their students. I believe that a tutor is an extra support for a student, someone that they can rely on, other than their teachers and peers, for…

Instilling confidence is the most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student. Because my end goal is for them to believe in their ability to learn new material even without my guidance. Listen - to what the student has to say. When someone gets to explain a topic, I know they are confident about what they learned. It also allows me to see if they truly got to grasp the subject. Watch - the student's body language. It gives away so much on how they are feeling about a topic. It allows you to gauge if they really are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them not the final answer to a question, but in detail the method in which that answer was obtained because ultimately in a test situation the student will have a completely new question in which they have to be confident in using their own methods and not simply memorised answers. I…

One thing is to definitely equip students with skills holistically. I believe even a tutor can influence a student to be the best version of themselves. Another is to add more knowledge and help their students polish their intelligence and skills more. School is a pretty adequate place to learn, but I believe through tuition students can further…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
