I think if I was a student I would want my tutor to be less intimidating and focus more on building my confidence, not only in the topics that is being but also to participate and join in the learning experience whether my answers are right or wrong. My strength as a tutor would be the breaking down of complex topics using example and relatable…

I think tutor should do everything for his or her students because after the parents only teacher is one person who can very closed for the student. Tutor should look after their students and if they have any bad habit then it's tutor responsibility to guide them in right direction and also inform their parents. Tutor can make hard subject into…

I think a chemistry tutor can bring out the inner talent of a student. Suppose a student who could not able to gain a good marks in exams or failing continuously, I will give that student mental support. I will give him or her motivation by telling that you can achieve anything in your life by doing hardworking. The most important thing is that a…

A good tutor should be able to provide perspective. A good tutor should also be able to listen and understand the student so that the most effective learning approach can take place. To foster a good tutor-student relationship first. Having this as the first form of connection will help know the students character and personality (and vice versa) which then will help the tutor know the best way to teach. I believe this relationship is necessary for effective teaching. I learnt most and learnt best from the lecturers with whom…

Making things simpler for the student to understand is the best thing all students want from a chemistry tutor. Giving them simpler methods to do questions and encouraging them to be better are very crucial. I have been tutoring students, who couldn't afford to take private tuitions, for almost one year. Great understanding and knowledge of the subject is possibly the best thing a chemistry tutor can offer. Making them able to do their current assignment is just not ideal, they should then also be able to understand the core knowledge of the questions, so that when similar questions arrived they would be able to do it themselves, or even better,…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to make the learning process fun, because at the end of the day, if the student isn't enjoying what they are doing(whether it be succeeding or seeing improvement), they aren't going to remember anything. The learning process has to be a clear pathway, with no maybes, and a fun, enjoyable time. I…

The most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to be someone there to listen to them, someone there to guide them through their academic problems (not just the academics but the mindset as well) and someone who they feel is having a positive impact on their learning experience. Throughout high school, I would help many of my…

Inside St JamesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mieke worked on visualising data and interpreting graphs, then solved word problems involving graphing data.

In Year 10, Ronja focused on ionic equations and practised calculating titration quantities using stoichiometric ratios.

For Year 11, Fatima reviewed redox equations and oxidation numbers before revisiting subatomic particles and tackling linear equations relevant to chemistry calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, the student still shows some minor mistakes in writing chemical formulas, especially when revising ionic and polyatomic ions—missteps that lingered after sessions unless earlier material was rechecked.

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework or maintain a school notebook, making it difficult to track progress in new math concepts.

For a Year 6 learner, untidy handwriting made written work hard to read, leading to confusion during revision.

In English (Year 10), one student hesitated to organize thoughts on paper, often leaving drafts unfinished; as the tutor noted, "she writes well but is often hesitant."

Recent Achievements

One St James tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously relied heavily on guidance now summarising the main steps for balancing ionic equations and explaining the stoichiometric ratio's importance in titration problems—an area that had caused confusion before.

In another session, a high schooler began independently solving questions after gaps in balancing half-equations were addressed; she tackled most homework with minimal help, marking a real shift from earlier sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through English assignments is now catching silly mistakes by reviewing his work more carefully, leading to clearer handwriting and fewer errors overall.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Millen Primary School.
